Help my necktie is talking to me AGAIN
Disco Elysium is a murder mystery… INLAND EMPIRE: What mystery? We already know WHO did it! It was COMUNISM. LOGIC: Don’t listen to him, this is about solving a case. ELECTROCHEMISTRY: and consuming all types of happy and fulfilling substances that will make you a super mega ultra Superstarcop. HORRIFIC NECKTIE: Yess!! Brataaan! That what *I like to hear! Quick get a shot of that whiskey! VOLITION: NO! Don’t do that, you can collect yourself, be better. ESPRIT DE CORPS: You wouldn’t want to disappoint someone. As I was saying, it’s a beautiful story that has you play as… What was the name? Tequila Something right? Yeah, that sounds about right. Anyways it’s sometimes sad and gloomy. Most of the time it’s crazy and surreal. But surprisingly, it’s a hopeful and very retrospective experience. With a very diverse and rich cast of characters you will start to appreciate the longer you deal with them. Honestly, it’s funny how some people really try make their own ideology and politics work in this game. But the reality is that it was made by some communists who had a dream to build 0.000005% of communism by developing a game. It has a funny, insightful and interesting approach to representing itself. I admit I’m a huge Liberal (like democratic norms, liberal rights, etc) and I would be lying if I said a like communist that much, but this journey felt really magical and got me to connect with some higher being called COMUNISM. INLAND EMPIRE: What is this Comunism? Could it be a new species to uncover? Or maybe a lost City to discover in the depths of sweaty and dark basements where unemployed hermits dwell? HALF LIGHT: Is this Comunicard watching us? Prepare to fight! Your life depends on it! VOLITION: Stay on topic. Stay off of the drugs and please… don’t listen to them. Maybe take a day off. You don’t really need to write this review in a day. Take your time. Well, the last thing I wanted to say about the game is that the whole world were this game is set in

Good, but could have been so much more
The game starts of brilliantly and the first 75% of the game had me completely hooked. However just as it's largest influence Planescape Torment, Disco Elysium falls slightly apart during the last 25% of the story. The conclusion left me slightly disappointed and I found some of it quite silly after the story being so serious for 90% of the game (like the Game of Thrones conclusion but not as bad). The second area is also a drop in quality but not terrible overall. The mechanics are unique and work well overall (although it is difficult to say at the beginning of the game which skills do what). RNG still plays a role in all situations but in an RPG it is fine (I was lucky and managed to pass 4 impossible checks in my playthrough). I recommend not reloading when failing checks as almost all failed checks can be either retried or solved differently. The humour is hit and miss for me. Some of it was genuinely funny other times I felt it was somewhat forced. I did not care for the political view choices in many dialogues either. In some cases they added to the experience. However I wanted to play an apolitical character focusing on the case and nothing else. This was not possible as being apolitical often meant that you agreed with the spoken dialogue (so I had a character who was a real populist, agreeing with whatever for political gains - instead of a neutral observer). Also some of the dialogue was forced in situations where it did not belong. Finally, I think that using existing languages and references to existing locations subtracts from the immersion. If you can speak Dutch, German, French, Spanish and have some understanding of some Slavic words the immersion is quickly lost as you asociate names and places with existing events and countries. This also means that you project your own knowledge into the game, which in my opinon should defintely no the aim. Unique at time brilliant, but so flawed. Like the detective.

Amazing Voice Acting, Story and Setting
Wow what a game, I honestly didn't think I was going to enjoy this game because of the length, there is a lot of reading and also the fact that there isn't any action gameplay. I am glad I waited for the Final Cut version of the game to come out before I played it because the voice acting was amazing and definitely made the game much more enjoyable. Overall, Disco Elysium's world building and story is captivating, the voice acting was amazing, and it was just fun to play and see what happens next. absolute bang of a game
Firstly I don't fully agree with the genre definition here. Yes you can say it RPG to the same extent as you can say that DOOM is. It actually is much closer to the quest games of late 90s/early 2000s. That said it does not take anything away from the game. The game itself is absolute masterpiece. From now on I have a new standard for character, dialog, narrative design for myself. And it will be very hard to surpass it.
