A year has passed since the operation to retrieve Dr. Kirk.
Third Energy, both a source of "ultimate clean energy" and a potential "ultimate weapon," has proven to be dangerously unpredictable. The government, having taken control of the project from Dr. Kirk, continued its development. Then, the “accident” happened once again.
The research city of Edward City was completely destroyed in an explosion from the Third Energy reactor—an event far more catastrophic than the previous accident. In response, the government launched a rescue mission to retrieve the research data and any remaining personnel.
To reach Edward City, believed to have been displaced in time by the reactor’s explosion, the government deployed an experimental, untested “time gate” device to send a rescue team back in time. No one could foresee the consequences of this mission—except one person: Regina…

Really good game, great port, and like the other reviewers say it's a shame the other languages aren't currently included, but it doesn't detract from the game. Thanks gog!
This is basically an alternative to the fan-made Rebirth mod project, which patches the game for the modern systems. The benefits of using this over ReBirth is a slightly better renderer with more options, out of the box support for modern controllers, and the fact that you don't have to track down the Japanese port of the original DC2 to run it, it works right out of the box.
Based on the ease of use, I would pick this one over Rebirth, even though it lacks certain sound improvements, as well as the options to fully remap controls from the game itself, as well as the option to make the game portable that the mod provides. It is also more stable. You can't go wrong with either though, but the ability to just purchase it here is invaluable.
When compared to emulating the PlayStation version it's not as clear cut because this is one of those games that uses pre-rendered backgrounds, and those do NOT scale up, they stay the same grainy resolution as in the year 2000 even if the character models do. While emulators like Duckstation allow for various downsampling and CRT filter option that makes them blend in with the foregrounds like they were meant to, no such luck here, unfortunately. PS1 version also has the option to rebind controls (via emulator of course) and slightly better sound quality. However, there's currently a fan made project to upscale the backgrounds which would in all likelihood be compatible with this version, giving it a DIFFERENT look that could be preferable to the PS1 original. But, again, as long as you are aware of this (same story as Resident Evil re-releases), it is still a very very good way to play an excellent classic game.
The game looks and plays wonderfully, however there are some problems with the key bindings.
Z and X keys are locked to the character movement and cannot be remapped. I used those as my keys for the "Item Menu" and "Aim" buttons, just like in the first game. However here, they are locked.
W,S,A and D buttons are also locked.
Please fix this mistake.
Do that and the game will be perfect.
The 5 stars are mainly because after years, decades, of demand, GOG managed to rescue these games from obscurity, and they are back...not only that, while the Resident Evil trilogy added last year needed some fan fixes to run properly, this works perfectly out of the box.
About the game itself, if the first one was "Resident Evil 1 with dinosaurs", this one is "Resident Evil 4 with dinosaurs", after the mixed reception the original one had, Capcom made a straight-up action game...which is a lot of fun, and in my opinion, a better game than the original, a game that could become pretty tedious pretty fast.
Sadly, it came out in late 2000, when the PS2 was already out, and not that many people bought it, so while the first game gained a cult following, the sequel didnt, and a lot of people are not even aware of its existence...which is a shame, because this game is A LOT more approachable than the first one.
Whatever the case, support these games (both of them) so GOG can keep up the amazing job they are doing preserving these gems.
