The future of developer updates on GOG..

Please upvote this and the other reviews regarding the cancellation of updates / DLC for ‘Atari 50’. This is so the voice of the GOG community can be heard by Atari / Digital Eclipse: That we say NO to our games being abandoned on this platform - as this would only set the precedent for further games having their support ended, and GOG users being left out with incomplete versions of games. We can affect change on these issues. It seems a staff member from GOG (Jed) will contact Atari and try to find a solution on the ‘Atari 50’ DLC (on the GOG Café Discord). Devs historically try to blame the GOG platform’s 'update method’ as a convenient pretext in avoiding their own responsibility: which is to support their paying customers of their products. Yet, this stated ‘update problem on GOG’ is wholly inconsistent for this to be true. Digital Eclipse' stated reason for the GOG DLC falling to launch along with the other platforms: - Sept 25 - DE stated on their YouTube trailer video for DLC1 that “something went wrong” and that they were trying to “fix" it. - Oct 4 - Atari’s stated response to a GOG customer, posted on the ‘Atari 50' forum, that their “team” were “actively working on the issue” and were trying to “resolve” it. 6 months later, after stating they were "actively working" on the project - Atari and Digital Eclipse' Jan 23 Discord statement: "...at this point there's not an active project to make the DLCs or Extended Edition available". "The studio's proprietary development tools don't allow for this content to be efficiently re-platformed to the VCS and GOG platforms". What exactly is this "content" ?: - ‘Atari 50’ / DLC - a collection of text, images, video and emulated games (ROMs), presented by Digital Eclipse' 'Timeline' interface. - This 'interactive documentary’ format software, is reused in all of Digital Eclipse' 'Gold Master Series'. I will let readers draw their own conclusions as to the significance of Atari's above statement.

Be wary of developer's support history

This ‘review’ is to highlight legitimate concerns for the future of updates / DLC for Digital Eclipse’s products on GOG, following Digital Eclipse’ historical neglect and abandonment of their games on the GOG storefront. These concerns are even more pertinent, given Digital Eclipse’ publisher, Atari’s, January 23 statement on Discord, regarding the cancellation of all updates / DLC for Digital Eclipse’ flagship product, ‘Atari 50', on the GOG store. After 6 months of waiting for GOG customers of ‘Atari 50’ - when other platforms received a key update / 2 DLC packs - Digital Eclipse and their publisher, Atari, cited the reason for the cancellation as: "The studio's proprietary development tools don't allow for this content to be efficiently re-platformed to the VCS and GOG platforms". The full statement can be found on the official ‘Atari VCS’ subreddit. This damning statement / admission by Atari and Digital Eclipse, respectively, indicates the constraints Atari has placed on their developer, in Atari seeking to avoid taking any ownership for this debacle. This also highlights the sheer irresponsibility of Atari as a publisher. What exactly is this "content" this statement refers to? A key update + two separate timelines and additional games: - 'The Wider World of Atari' - launched on other platforms on 26th September 2024. - 'The First Console War' - launched on other platforms on 8th November 2024. This is essentially a collection of emulated ROMs, connected by Digital Eclipse' 'Timeline' interface. This 'interactive documentary’ format software, is reused in all of Digital Eclipse' 'Gold Master Series'. For Atari to reveal that Digital Eclipse's “proprietary” (own) development tools are unable to “efficiently” re-platform this "content" ('interactive documentary’ format) to the GOG and VCS platforms, should raise serious concerns for GOG users about any current and future games in the "Gold Master Series" receiving any updates / DLC.
