This might be the most solidly 4 game I have played. The gameplay is engaging, there is a story though a little light, the dice randomizing and customizing are fun to play with, there is an amazing amount of variety in gameplay and replayability, and it's a pleasant amazingly well stylized game. Someone on this team really, REALLY liked dice. Which is great, that's not only the focus of the game, but essentially all that is there. But those dice LOOK real, like, I can FEEL those dice. The art here, all around, is really top notch... Which is why the short comings drag it down so much, which is really sad because a few small changes could make a huge difference. The locations look amazing. Every place on the board is lovingly crafted to look just how it should for a classic middle ages game. But the problem is they look so real, that it's genuinely tough to tell what the buildings actually DO at a glance. There's nothing distinctive about most of the locations, which makes it tough at a quick glance to know where you're supposed to put your dice to get what effect to happen. The icons of what dice need to be put where are tiny, mostly indistinct, white images on top of sand or snow, and are usually blocked by your other buildings. I can't find my dice. They just disappear on the map. There is a nifty map slider on the side that shows you where your dedicated districts are, and where enemies and fires are. Great? Could we maybe add buildings being built and placed dice? Also, damage to dice is a great idea, but wounded dice are real difficult to see what face they're actually on, but worse, constructed dice look damaged half the time. But the number 1 problem: When the seasons change, the council convenes to give you three options for bonuses. Great. Except they can be selected before you can see them, and they appear exactly where you're about to try to put your freshly thawed dice to work. It's good, really, but it needed 1 more UX person on the team.
