Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Was uninspiring, still is

I'm old enough that I was in my 20s when this first came out. Even then it was a clunky hack-and-slash button-masher that failed to inspire me. It has no appreciable story to it, epecially compared with modern games. The graphics are painful and the entire experience is dreary and stressful. It's a repetitive grind with occasional intersting drops that don't make up for the mind-numbing gameplay. I've always wondered why people enjoyed this and, now that there are so many zillions of better games from which to choose, I'm even more perplexed.

decent rogue-clone

diablo is the commercially most successful rogue-clone rpg. by today's standards, it is hardly playable / bearable, and more or less an endless grind of monotonous button-clicking until your index finger joints hurt. it had been hyped by blizzard, who continued milking the franchise with diablo 2, diablo 3 -- and now with ridiculous pricing here on gog, albeit it is an outdated game with a trope that had been used to death (the hero as world savior from certain doom) on countless occasions. the hellfire expansion by sierra is not included, which is a shame, really (no monk class available). it will be interesting to see if blizzard will authorize the release of diablo 2 with the lord of destruction expansion, then the series would be complete. however, today is it only of nostalgic value to rpg collectors and completists. if you want enjoyable gameplay, go for throne of darkness and titan quest or path of exile.

use your $$ better for that title

Hell-o :-) At first I would like to introduce you a malverous cartoons that bring back your memories: http://pozdrawiam.lo.gs/carbot-animations-gallery241522 - this was done by individual, who needs support. 2nd. There is a mod of Diablo/Hellfire that is mountained by Russian individual developer, and the Diablo game is patched REWRITTEN by him very well. Imagine Diablo at 1920x1080 on 50" LCD - imagine it. Imagine that every NPC in town could be near - no need to go 5 minutes to reach Adria. Imagine that you have a "hellfire" stash available for every player in one team, during a game (and it is permanent at the machine) /no mixing signleplayer stash with multiplayer stash/. Imagine that each time you start in Dungeons under chapel monsters are stronger and 1-5 levels could bring 2 upgrades for your characters. Imagine your character run always but slows down to stepping when monsters are around - not always just endless walking through empty passages. Maybe stop imagine and use the mod - 5$ for individual developer is more significant to the community than spending it here for the software that wasn't patched last 20 years (D 1.09b patch is dated May 2001). Did I mention that I use 2-years old binaries on W7/WXP and the developing and (OS bug fixing) is still done month by month. I advise you. Use your money for that title very wise! Sorry GOG, the individual developer should be supported for his contribution to the TITLE. Blizzard s*ckz - it is true.

Missing Content

I don't know what went wrong, but the Butcher, King Leoric, and all associated quests and lore are gone. Missing. The most memorable moments from Diablo are missing. I don't know if this was the case for the playstation version, but this is not Diablo.

Too much. Too old.

No expansion. 20+ year old title for $10? Ugh. It was a fantastic game, back then. But you're just doing yourself a disservice if you support Blizzard's attempt at spinning this shenanigan to fund their mobile clone.
