Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Still fun as ever.

Game is still great, as the original kept more towards the old school rogue-like formula that eventually has became absent from future ARPG titles, becoming more Action than RPG. Having to manage various items and guess as to whether or not the item will have value in the future of your run. Random quests and items that can permanently buff or debuff your character. And where becoming too rich in gold can actually over encumbered your inventory, creating another way of managing your items. Though, it is missing a few Quality of Life issues here due to it's age, overall there isn't a lot I would change from this game. Playing it makes me hope for more games in the near future like this, with it's grid-like movement gameplay, as I feel the RPG elements in a genre like that still has a lot of potential to be explored, rather than turning your game into a more action oriented pace, removing any type of thought or strategy from these type of games. Overall, still great. And the HD mod that comes with this game works amazingly well.

This has long lain doomed...

I´m biased... yes... Playing Diablo since i´m 14 Years old. But now, finally, i can set my CD to rest for good :) This is as amazing as it was on the first Day. Go for it if you are a Fan from Day One or if you just want to know what this "Old Farts" talk about. Final Point... As i said "We have long lain doomed, the Time to awaken has come, now we shall get FEEEEEEEEED!" Pls... give us Hellfire. Yes? Do you?

One of its kind

Diablo is great. I remember playing it as a kid and being afraid of enemies hiding in the dark. The game matured well except for cut scenes, which do look awful. I like the vibe. It's dark, scary, and evil. You truly feel alone and surrounded. I can't help but compare it to the sequel - Diablo II (I never played the third game). Two things stand out - the game mechanics were significantly improved and the atmosphere was damaged. It is true that game mechanics can be a little frustrating in Diablo, especially how projectiles work. Rogue used to be my most favorite character, but during the replay I was frustrated with how counter-intuitive shooting is. Also on Windows 10 there is a lag in mouse movement, which didn't help. I expect playing the Sorcerer to be equally unpleasant. I must try the warrior. In Diablo 2, that was no longer an issue. However, Diablo II was not scary or dark at all. Instead, it was colorful. I need to focus to remember any piece of music from the sequel. In Diablo there are 5 or 6 pieces, but I remember them all. They play on repeat and yet are not tiring. The sounds are very well chosen. The color pallette is modest but well put together. I also like monster design. It's interesting how enemies turn more human the closer you get to hell. Lastly, level themes are great and progress nicely. There isn't much of a story that was told in Diablo and I see it as an advantage. Too often game plots are cliche beyond belief. I also like how quests are assigned randomly. In Diablo II every game was identical, it became very boring very quickly. So, if the sequel is "so much worse", why is it so popular while the original is not? I think the answer is in game mechanics. At the end of the day, it is a game. If hitting your enemies is not fun, then what's the point? I wish Diablo 2 had different art design, but in the end it is a better game. All in all, Diablo is still fun to play over 20 years later. That's quite an achievement, if you ask me.
