A highly replayable classic
A fun dungeon delver. Long enough to be a fun and replayable challenge but short enough to not get tedious. Much slower paced than later games in the series, rewards careful thoughtful play where you rely on good tactical positioning and clever use of all the tools available to you to overcome overwhelming numbers. Set entirely in Tristram and the infamous dungeon beneath its cathedral, the gameplay has you constantly assessing whether you should push onward to maximise your progress or return to the safety of the town to repair and regroup. The dungeon layout changes everytime you start a new character (or a new game+ run) so the challenge always stays fresh. If you are coming from playing Diablo 3 onwards, be prepared to progress more slowly but get the chance to see some familiar faces and the inspiration for the later lore. If you are coming to the series fresh, think of it like a cross between the gameplay of OG Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale and the push-your-luck expeditions of Darkest Dungeon. If you find this one too slow, maybe consider Diablo 2 (still challenging but slightly quicker and more expansive) or the later titles for something more fast-paced with loot galore.
