Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

5/5 with mod

I had mixed feelings when I started this game the first time. I mean, I played it first time when it arrived to this site. When I saw that you cant run as in Diablo 2 I was... sad. But I persevered and after couple of hours it was just fine. It didn't bothered me much. And then I found out mod: Diablo HD mod (Project code name: Belzebub) I still cant run but now everything looks/feels much better! Now I LOVE the game!

The Father of all ARPG

The father of all ARPG. Dark and horror, chilling and gothic music. Dangerous enemies and lots of traps ! The graphics and the gameplay are hard to master but you will enjoy a lot when you start understanding. The experience is always different when you play the game. Different items you grab, different enemies to fight against, different strategies to survival and to win ! Prepare your sword and shield and be ready to fight against the Lord of Hell and his army.

Great game when came out, still good now

It was groundbreaking when it came out but still pretty good even today. Pretty short unless you want to either replay on higher difficulty or try other classes but that is a plus in my book, to actually be done with a game after a weekend. My only real wish would be that they implemented coop from PSX for a complete couch experience. Otherwise, you should be able to find mods to completely change the game or just give you the QoL enhancements. It is a game from '96 so you should know what you are giving yourself in to already.

Good game, brings back memories

If you have an issue with crashes, just add it to your windows antivirus exclusions, seems to work a charm for me. Zero crashes since then.

Gripping Atmosphere & Superb Scoring

It's always hard to say much about old games, especially the highly influential and innovative ones. Because the standards you have for one genre has probably been set by that specific game. Diablo is that one game that defined the Action RPG genre. From the basic mechanics to the possibilities of storytelling in the style, D1 started it. If you've ever played any action RPG or any hack n slash, then you know what it's like — cause this is the game that started it. Because of its age (released in 1997), don't expect too much though. Skill trees are not that sophisticated, some features and controls need to be manually set up, the story is very basic, and the setting is limited to a town and the 16-level dungeon (with some hidden areas here and there). The best thing about Diablo 1 is its atmosphere. Despite the aged graphics and sound effects, it still manages to immerse you into its demon-infested world. Seriously, this game still managed to creep me out. And part of it is also because of the superb scoring. Each section of the dungeon has its unique feel and the background music complements it so well with its dreadful ambience. And the theme for the town 'Tristram'? Chef's kiss. My biggest disappoint about the game though is the final act (SPOILERS ahead). Diablo (the final boss) is laughably easy. Tje fact that I died more times trying to kill the Butcher than I did with the Dark Lord himself is hilarious. I didn't even have to switch up my usual strategy, which is to lure him away from the mob as far as possible so I can 1v1 him. But that isn't even the biggest let down yet. The moment you kill him, the game immediately goes into its cinematic ending and then ends there. That's it and you're back in the main menu. This feels disappointing cause there's little to no sense of accomplishment. But whatever it lacks, Diablo deserves its reputation as the father of ARPGs for its enjoyable linear gaming experience, memorable atmosphere, and marvelous scoring.
