Demo version of Dex is available here

Includes the Extra Outfits DLC.

Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!

Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?

Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.

Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.

A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
  • Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
  • Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
  • Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
  • Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
  • Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
  • Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
  • Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!

Amazing but too short

This game blends amazing atmosphere, character customization and exploration with a well-told cyberpunk story. The game is intuitive and easy to grasp, even for people who are new to either action-adventures or cyberpunk. The world is so beautifully built that I often walk around the city forgetting that I'm actually playing a 2-D platformer. The amount of choice in the game is very big, from how to fight your battles to what you install into your body. The voice acting is also very well done. Some of the more emotional quests really bring across the desperation or sadness of the characters, simply through the voice acting. Superb, I must say. Even though the game is perfectly linear, I enjoyed all three of my playthroughs immensely due to the atmosphere. My only major problem is that the game is way too short to properly enjoy all of its features. Since the world is totally static, I can say that the amount of customization points you get is actually perfect to make a character that feels complete but not overpowered. However, there is so much to this game that completing the story feels like an introduction. The fact that it ends on a cliff-hanger also does not help. It REALLY feels like there should be a part 2, or like you should be max level after the "final boss" but keep exploring in a different city after the final cutscene. But nope, credits. All in all though, action adventure fans will love this game! Just make sure to explore all the various areas, you will have way more fun than just completing the story.

Surprisingly Epic

From previous reviews, I was expecting a great experience, but nothing too memorable. Wow, was I surprised. This is one of my favorite games of all time. It's solidly done. The best I can do to describe this game is "well-balanced". Not only is the story great, but the sound, art, and atmosphere work incredibly well together to produce a truly believable and immersive world. What's more remarkable is how integrated the gameplay is with this world. Although 2D, your character can interact with most of the enviroment. Not only that, but RPG elements of upgrading your character's abilities are really worth struggling for, as they make a noticable difference (but not too much to make the game too easy). The "mini game" of hacking is also really well done and innovative -- and it's actually one of the more difficult aspects of the game. All in all, I found Dex to be game that truly captures what gaming is about and what is missing in many contemporary AAA titles -- fun.

Didn't expect so much fun

I bought the game in a sale, but I didn't expect too much from it. This feeling remained for some time even while playing, but the game revealed it's story piece by piece and became more and more interesting. It also took me longer to play than I had expected for a title of that price. The creators have put a lot of attention to detail when building the different levels, and that made me enjoy the atmosphere of the game a lot. I play it on the not-yet released Debian Linux 10 (Buster), with a Intel HD3000 GPU on one and a Radeon RX560 GPU on the other computer, both with the free software drivers, and everything works fine there.

Definitely worth playing

Great atmosphere, open-ish world, lots of side quests, captivating cyberpunk story that is not as simple as it may seem at the beginning. The world is full of little details and interesting characters, though it rarely feels like you're on the run from some power. The only thing that I didn't enjoy that much was cyberspace sequences. After you get some upgrades, it becomes a bit easy and monotonous, even though the game designers tried to keep it different. Overall, it is definitely worth playing and exploring this game as much as you can. It is diverse, challenging enough, and there are plenty of details that you will enjoy.

An immersive cyberpunk experience

First I will begin by Dex's downsides : - combat gameplay. Bad, not godawful because it's playable but you will never take any pleasure. Melee is too easy because mobs patterns are simplistic and bland while range (guns) is clunky. - animations are inconsistent. Some of them are good but some are stiff. Not shockingly bad mind you, but animations are very important for me in a video game, more than graphics so I tend to be picky about them. - some stuttering although it was installed on an SSD, and some collision bugs here and there - rare, hopefully. Everything else was a blast. Art direction if nothing original is top notch, with great attention to details. Musics are great, sound design is good too. VA is either hit or miss but overall good. Level design is excellent, with lots of secrets. History is your typical cyberpunk trope, but no story is ever original, what's important is the story telling and Dex doesn't fail in that department. Good pace, well written characters, even the few cinematics are great. Lots and lots of quests with, most of the time, different ways to solve them, which is pretty rare nowadays to be worth mentioning. Game takes a dozen hours to beat on average and I think it is just right, not too short but never felt dragging either. I wholeheartedly recommend buying Dex if you seek more a side scroller RPG rather than an action/platformer game, the latter might disappoint you otherwise.
