GOG.com!
The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control.

My first, IRRC, Deus Ex game, I loved every second of it. I loved the differing ways you could approach many situations. The Revision mod is a must have in my opinion.
...as I do. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying it's a bad game, just that it's not for me. I bought it because I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution and I liked a lot. It became one of my favourites almost instantly. So I search for the other Deus Ex games, saw everybody say they're great so I put them in my wish list. When GoG told me this game was 80% off I purchased even knowing I couldn't play it in a couple of months. Bad Idea.
Again: I'm not saying it's a bad game but it is NOT Human Revolution. And no, it's not because it's an old game (well, maybe a little bit because the engine but I'll talk about it later) because I love old games. I grew with Odysey2 and MSX games and later with Street Fighter II, Duke Nukem 3D, Xenon 2, Lemmings and many many more and I still play them. I'm used to old stuff and I love it.
But this game. Oh, man! It's not my meat.
If you commit the tiniest mistake you're sold. And you'll commit a lot. Lighting is awful (this is because it's old) and you can hardly see anything even in well illuminated environments. Movement feels weird, initially a bit like HL2 but worse. Climb ladders is hard (specially from water) and jump is harder. Maybe it's because the physics engine (again, it's old). And fighting is hard (this is not because it's old) specially with melee weapons because 1) it's hard to calculate distances and 2) sometimes the weapon doesn't behave as you think it should (not only melee, also guns and such).
It has a tutorial. To complete it is a pain in the ass: I needed 3 tries. At least it serves to realize what controls you have to change (and you should).
And the first mission isn't an introduction. Oh no! It pushes you directly in to the meat without mercy. And don't think the "Easy" level helps: it doesn't.
I'll admit I'm not the best player ever in any game, but this game was not for me. Maybe it's not for you either, so don't buy it unless you''ll play it before the refund time is over.
Scholarly papers have been written about this game. It's possible to play it three times in a row without realizing that an entire branch of the plot exists. Deus Ex 2 and 3 don't even exist, like Highlander 2 or the last three Star Wars movies. This is IT.
Having said that, a $5 bargain bin copy of DX GotY is basically DRM free, considering you have to copy it to your HD and install it from there. $10 for a seventh-form game you have to download and print the documentation for, well, whatever floats your boat.
