Deus Ex: Revision a mod which drastically overhauls the FPS/RPG masterpiece while preserving its greatness, is now available for FREE on
GOG.com!
The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control.
Key Features:
Real role-playing from an immersive 3D, first-person perspective. The game includes action, character interaction and problem solving.
Realistic, recognizable locations. Many of the locations are built from actual blueprints of real places set in a near future scenario.
A game filled with people rather than monsters. This creates empathy with the game characters and enhances the realism of the game world.
Rich character development systems: Skills, augmentations, weapon and item selections and multiple solutions to problems ensure that no two players will end the game with similar characters.
Multiple solutions to problems and character development choices ensure a varied game experience. Talk, fight or use skills to get past obstacles as the game adapts itself to your style of play.
Strong storyline: Built on "real" conspiracy theories, current events and expected advancements in technology. If it's in the game, someone, somewhere believes

In order to run the game smoothly on modern machines, I suggest the following:
1. Install the GMDX mod to be able to play in higher resolutions with modern tweaks (this mod is arguably better than the Revision as it does not *revise* the original but *enchance* it instead while remaining true to the original vanilla experience).
2. If you're having graphics issues (most notably, not being able to adjust brightness, the game looks too dark), switch the renderer to the latest one, i.e. DirectX 10.
3. If your game freezes while escaping to and navigating through the menus, switch to the *fullscreen* instead of *borderless fullscreen* mode.
4. Have fun!
I'm going to be brutally honest about the entirety of my experience. I was at first very "meh" about playing this game, even though I am by any measure NOT new to playing games old enough to go to a casino. I was nevertheless skeptical that I would enjoy an RPG this old (had gotten it this year). Got on training, gave it up about halfway. Concluded that whatever amount of time and money I had spent was "not big of a loss". I closed the game, a few days passed by, re-opened it just out of curiosity, completed the training, then started the first mission. About halfway through the mission onward, I realized that if I hadn't tried this game again it would've been the dumbest mistake of my life. I'll explain why.
-Variety of choice of gameplay style. You can be anywhere in between stealthy and 100% non-violent and loud and murderous throughout the game. An equally diverse choice of builds, usage of surrounding environment, weapons and modifications you can apply helps reach your goal.
-Your build choices can change every single aspect of the game.
-Environment that successfully conveys to you what it intends to.
-Usage of the vast majority of the environment is very versatile, leaving you a lot of choices for modifying the world to your preference.
-Almost zero pre-rendered content (as in cutscenes and in-game activity), all happens in the game's engine, which keeps you immersed through the whole journey. It has definitely helped in allowing a smooth transition to modern systems, and not feeling out of place.
-The plot, oh boy the plot. You have to see for yourself. Moreover, YOU can decide how much of the plot you want to uncover or focus on gameplay.
-Quality of dialog and information is one-of-a-kind. Truly motivating and inspiring.
-Replay value is insane, it ages like a good wine.
-Consequences from many actions that affect the game later on.
-Level explorability.
-Excellent music, some of it inspires me as a person.
And so much more. Truly my all-time favorite.
Imagine if you will, a world similar to Blade Runner, only less optimistic. A world where there is in one way or the other constant conflict, not just between nations, but within too. A world where a terrorist attack is not the worst part of the day. A world where there is no clear good side. A world where you are a special agent trying to do your job and try to be objective, or not.
A first person shooter with strong RPG elements (well, stronger than Oblivion anyway), lots of attitude, variety of problems/obstacles and more than one way to solve them. Plenty of dialogue, conspiracy theories, dark atmosphere and in the middle of it all, you.
Play like a new Rambo, or Sherlock Holmes, or something in between, with specialization in a variety of fields and weapons. It's up to you how you play.
The bad? Slightly off shooting mechanics (which you can get used to them after a while), graphics while fitting for the game, were never exactly groundbreaking. Not terrible, but not good either animations.
The good? Everything else.
Suggestions? Two. Buy the game, save often.
This is an rpg with a capital R. The story, characters and plot makes this game still stand out miles a head of the competition.
The combat isn't great and the game quickly becomes easy, but that's not really the point. Talk to people, seek information, explore every area - it's well worth it.
I highly recommend installing the New Vision mod that greatly enhances the dated graphics.
Well where to start? I'm sure you've heard of Deus Ex but if you haven't played it, you owe it to yourself to buy this immediately. This game is so good, I've attempted to get my father to play it and my father is not a man who plays video games. Now to the details.
Deus Ex is an amazing game. I don't care if you call it an RPG, a FPS, a stealth-action game or whatever, it doesn't matter. The fact is, DE transcends traditional genre archetypes and is quite simply, one of the best games ever made.
You play as JC Denton, an all-business super human agent thrust into the middle of a world in conflict. You are highly trained and told from the get-go that you can handle problems your way. Even on your very first objective, you can choose to run n' gun, sneak around and avoid enemy troops, show mercy by using a stun-gun or stab everything in sight. Better yet, the characters in the world will react differently depending on which approach to take. Perhaps not so amazing now, but where do you think games like Mass Effect got the idea from?
The story in this game is a deftly woven conspiracy that should offer some true surprises to a first-time player. Dialogue is often forgettable, but is hilarious and or excellent on enough occasions to stand out. The gameplay is perfect. It's not necessarily ground-breaking, but it's exactly what you need to get you through the amazing story.
Shooter fans will be comfortable here, and RPG fans will appreciate that skill upgrades and augmentations will have a noticeable effect on your gameplay. Perhaps the only misstep is the fact that lock-picking and use multi-tools is automatic and involves no mini-game. But, when you consider that most of the time the mini-games controlling hacking/lockpicking suck (hi Alpha Protocol) it's much more forgivable. Then, once you consider that you can probably beat Deus Ex in pretty much its entirety without using a lockpick or a multi-tool it becomes irrelevant and also highlights just how amazing this game is. There is always a way.
