Descent 2

Surely a technical marvel when it released, it's best enjoyed with the DXX-Rebirth source port which allows for higher resolutions than the 800x600 the game comes with. My gripes are with the controls - standard controls are unplayable (the source port fixes that somewhat) but the 360 degrees movement comes with issues, like orientation. I am not a fan of the mandatory timed escape sequences after every mission that give you 90 seconds to escape the detonating mine (you better memorized where the exit is...). Gameplay-wise it's repetitive, despite some variations in the textures: you fly through a mine, shooting at several flying robots/drones while hunting for 3 color-coded keys to find the reactor which you need to blow up and then escape. It improves on the original with improved graphics and balancing and more variety when it comes to textures. Enemies are more intelligent than those found in other shooters of that era as they dodge, flee and ambush. It's a decent shooter but I prefer classic DOOM.

Ahh, the memories... this game should get a remake! :)

It's decent.

I played this when it was new and I can say, anyone who says it's worth five stars is on a nostalgia trip. The game, at it's core, is solid and rewarding. Upgrades feel good and progress makes you wanna keep playing but it is just SO hard to go back and play this again. The controls feel really awkward to say the least and it can be REALLY easy to get lost during a fire fight. I played the very first one more recently and I died more by crashing into walls than I did from enemies. There's something to be said for this style of gameplay but the first two installments lack a LOT of polish. If you think you might like this sort of gameplay just get Descent 3. It's better in every aspect. This is more like a time capsule than an actually enjoyable gaming experience. Fun to laugh at and show the kiddies but ultimately, very unplayable.
