Description
Rufus is not a pleasant guy. Ill-tempered and entirely too convinced of his own greatness, he lives at the edge of a small settlement somewhere in the most remote sector of the garbage-covered planet Deponia. He dreams of a better life in the floating cities of wealth and beauty high above the planet surface. When the angelic Goal falls from these privileged spheres down into a neighboring trash heap, Rufus sees his chance. He decides to bring the unconscious beauty back to her home. Only a vague hope of making it off Deponia at first, he soon formulates an unscrupulous plan, as he learns that he is a dead ringer for Goal’s upper-class husband. The planned handover is only the beginning of a wild chase across Deponia full of twists, turns and mystifying mix-ups.

Deponia is a fast-paced comedy of errors and one of the most unusual love stories in gaming history. The twist-filled story takes its off-beat characters all over trash planet Deponia, a unique game world in the style of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Matt Groening. From Kuvaq, an improvised village built inside a giant trash heap, to the swimming black market and the dark corners of the elevated planetary railways: The new adventure game from the makers of The Whispered World, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout and A New Beginning is brought to life with detailed hand-painted backgrounds in widescreen format and top-quality cartoon animation.

  • Unique comic style with hand-drawn HD resolution 2D graphics.
  • Bizarre characters and wacky humor.
  • Challenging puzzles and hours of dialogue.
  • Unique universe in the tradition of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Matt Groening.
  • From the creators of the award-winning games Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes, and The Whispered World.

An ok point'n' click adventure....

Although its puzzle are sometimes a little off, other times completely far fetch and impossible to comprehend if you don't try out every single possible combination of objects/action ... or after looking to a guide.( I mean, I guess it could resemble some puzzle back at the end of the 80'/start of the 90', but we supposedly evolved from that) And that's where the major problem of Deponia 1 lies : the absurdity of its puzzle that even manage to ''ruin'' a good story. Speaking of which , the setting of Deponia is actually interesting, along with its graphics, soundtracks and design. On top of that, its humour, although sometimes it don't manage to be funny, is overall decent : basically it's anti hero story with a lot of nonsense facts and a horrible human being as protagonist. Still, the puzzles , which should be on ''tune'' with the story, most of the time actually ruin the pace of the story. So, do I recommend it? surprisingly yes, overall its a good game, with some problem yes, but still for fans of the genre, it is still a good game.

Awesome point and click adventure

I've played countless point and click adventure games and this is easily one of the best available. Graphics, sound, puzzles, the characters and the whole story are all extremely well done. The only negative would be some of the reviews, which put me off buying this for some time. Luckily I decided to buy it anyway and while playing decided to buy the other parts as well. As I've now finished it here are some further thoughts. Unlike some adventure games you can't die, or mess up forcing you to reload an older savegame, etc. You can simply keep going until you progress further through the game. There's also no silly "arcade" parts or whatever, unlike some of the other adventures, which I think have no place in these type of games. The puzzles are really good and well thought out. I didn't have to get any clues, but the game does give the option to skip some of the puzzles. The story and characters are however just as good as the puzzles. The main character, Rufus, is a bit silly, but that's clearly intentional and fits well in the game. Overall great game. If you like point and click adventures I strongly recommend buying this game. Anyway, time to start up Deponia 2.

The creator betrayed his creation

The first entries are solid games. Few bugs, unique world, lovely art style, building plot and character stakes throughout each game, interesting puzzles that don't get repetitive (and the few that aren't intuitive can just be looked up in walkthroughs; I got stumped maybe 3 or 4 times in the entire series). The last game (and the ending of the penultimate game) are an abandonment of the very essence of the game and its themes. The creative director chose a cheap cope out over honoring the nature of the lead character. Without spoiling the ending, just know that the protagonist is bottled chaos. It is in his nature to self-sabotage but its also his nature to fix his mistakes and to overcome all odds. His life would never be a resolved success or failure. The last game was a middle finger to everything they had built up. I suspect they felt cool and edgy when they chose the ending of the story but I was disappointed and frustrated at this cheap conclusion. It is a testament to the quality of the original idea and execution that it bothered me enough to warn others about the bad ending. If you don't get invested in the significance of a good story, if you are not bothered by inconsistent narrative, then don't worry about this reveiw. The game would easily be 4.5/5 stars in that case.

Good Game

A good and beautiful game, but some puzzles are just too illogical.
