I think I'm spoiled

I replayed Defender's Quest 1 recently, mostly because this second game took a while to release on GOG. I instabought this one because the first game is still quite fun. After playing a similar game called Arknights, I guess I was expecting quite a lot from this game because it had the first game to bounce off of But after playing for a short while, the "draw" of this game is much less clear. And looking at Steam reviews, this sentiment isn't exactly rare. I understand the developer lost a child and went through a whole lot of pain to make this game, but in the end this might have worked better as some special DLC/expansion for the first game, releasing it as a brand new title, well, you're going to face scrutiny. If you don't match people's expectations, they're going to be disappointed. I'm not refunding this, I think it's still ok for what it is. But newcomers should just buy the first game. I don't like writing this review, it's painful to see a series you liked go a bit downhill. Celestian Tales comes to mind with a similar troubled indie team and a sequel that doesn't match the first standout game, but for every defeat we get games like Stardew Valley, Balatro, FTL, and hopefully the planned sequels of several of those games don't turn out like this one. So yeah, play the first game if you read this whole thing. This second game is so underwhelming by comparison

Very entertaining, but that art style...

I was genuinely curious (and anxious) if long (and interrupted) development time won't hurt the sequel. I have finished entire game and can tell - fortunately, it didn't/. I had again that syndrome, that I wanted to turn on the game "just to try" and finished much later, going through at least a couple of levels. General premises are the same, but there are some modifications that are adding a bit of spice. For example instead of our main "character" this time we're defending access to our living ship. Which we can configure with various weapons, each different with type of action (some of them instead of dealing damage, can freeze or push back enemies). This time we don't have possibility to have more than one soldier of each type (so basically only other heroes are available on battlefield), so things are a bit more tricky. There are also some types, that have some unique style (one of them has ability to have two "spawn points", between which he can jump at any moment). I would say that this new model encourages player to better plan placement and weaponry of "living ship", as even choice of weapons can have outcome at some crucial moments of level. I think that game also requires more to "recall" your troops and place them somewhere else than original. While I'm missing a lot characters from original DQ, with time I've begin to like this new cast... Except for the style of 2D arts in cutscenes. This is one of the elements that I genuinly dislike - while in-game they look quite ok, this 2D art is at some moments just not aesthethically presentable. Game is quite long, but I had impression that it didn't had that many sub-quests as first game. Sure, some were added long after release, but still I would love to have some "side-plot", not mandatory but adding a bit of flavour. Unfortunately, private tragedy stroke hard developer (Lars) and the finishing touches were made without him. But still, game turn out to be very entertaining and worth purchase.

A very different sequel

I will just say that I am around half way through the game, but I'm sure I've pretty much seen what is abound to the game. Firstly, this game has no ties with the original (aside from the game mechanic's). Secondly, this is more of a stripped down polished linear experience, like Defense Grid. Thirdly, there's alot of things missing if your wanting stuff from the orginal. If you were wanting dozens of people lining them up like chess, that's not here; if you were wanting challenge/endless maps, that's not here; if you were wanting lore about the world and sidequests, that's not here. But what this does have is more map engagement (like a person who can teleport to two different places on the map), more strategic use of the people since you have limits to who you can bring on the field, the same charm as the previous one, and the music isn't as recurrent in your mind as the previous game. And in the end, it is still a tower-defense game. So all in all it's more of a game than the previous one, but less of a world; it all depends on what you want.

Solid and short

This is an enjoyable game. Not super complicated with a great difficulty adjustment. I really liked the art design, it is very colorful, novel and atmospheric. Compliments the story. Same goes for music. There are not too many tracks, but they are good and they fit the mood of a story perfectly. Story and characters are fine, nothing new but definately wholesome. For those who played previous game, you will find a lot of similarities and a few reused assets. I personally liked it, it brought good nostalic feeling. Unfortunately, there is no game plus, nor extra chalenges. I also havent found any secrets. I'm very happy with this game, it has given me an pleasant, laid back experience.

As awesome as the original

This sequel is just as good as the first one. Amazing music. Similar levels of xp and scrap gain. I played for 7 hrs so far and I am looking forward to playing more.
