Death Road to Canada is a Randomly Generated Road Trip Simulator. You control and manage a car full of jerks as they explore cities, recruit weird people, argue with each other, and face gigantic swarms of slow zombies.
Death Road is built for replay value. Everything is randomized: locations, events, survivor appearances and personalities. There's a different story every time you play, set in a world that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Up to 500 zombies can hunt you down at a time. Fight them, try to squirm past, or run.
Use the character creator to put yourself, friends, and family in the game. Have them show up and get eaten!
Find special and rare events, weapons, and characters with strange abilities.
Make tough choices in Interactive Fiction events. Get different options and results based on the traits of your party members.
Teach a dog how to drive a car.
Throw chairs. Get your characters strong enough to throw large sofas.
Most family friendly zombie apocalypse game on the market! Any gore explosion is in a cute style. We censor the word d*ngus once.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I have the Steam version and will be re-buying on GOG to support the devs. This game is by-far the most fun I've had in a long time. It's reminiscent of Oregon Trail combined with old-school arcade beat-em-ups and looting rogue-likes. The music is excellent and humor non-stop. HEAVILY RECOMMENDED.
I purchased this last night and played 3 games so far. Really short games, packed with fun stuff. Really simple controls and mechanics, you can hit stuff, pick up stuff, throw stuff and swap between 3 active weapons.
The game is challenging but not right off the bat, it has a very nice difficulty progression, so you will have some time to master it before it gets too hard. The music is cheerful and it's a nice addition to the goofy style of the sprites.
Combat is quite rudimentary, you can hit with melee weapons and shoot stuff. The zombies explode and lose parts in a very detailed way when hit. So you can see them spit a bunch of teeth when you hit them with a golf club, or their guts which is really nice.
The travelling parts are as fun as the zombie-skull-crushing parts, you watch as your characters interact with each other in different ways and there are a lot of varied events that can happen, like finding other survivors, dogs, cars, bandits and hordes of zombies. Your characters personalities and traits will show up during these events, in different interactions, sometimes they will argue or have different ideas. You'll end up getting attached to your characters since they are so distinct.
Things that would make the game better:
- 4 player support (the developer promises to bring this on a future update)
- A post-travel log, I wish my adventures weren't so ephemeral, I wish I could save up stories of the travels, or at least a hall of fame with my best survivors, their traits and perhaps how they died.
My verdict: A very fun roguelike game to play both with friends or solo with tons of content and replay value. Recommended for people with a sense of humour which like absurdity and zombie movies that don't take themselves too serious.
A very good surprise !
Here is a summary of the good points that convinced me:
-You can create your own hero. Customize face, clothes, hats. Also select 2 perks, one serves as a skill and the other is much more related to personality.
You can even create characters that will join the roster of random encounters you will recruit during your journey.
Heroes are very funny to play with. As an example i've found "Alvis" a brawler that sings during fights. Or Anton a boring man but resourceful in bad situations... (i love this guy !).
Many skills to choose.
-Objectives are straight forward but varied. Collecting, trading, encounters are clear and difficulty is fair enough to give you ways to solve problems.
As an example: if you're low on food, encounters will quickly turn around collecting/trading food. Wich is quite logical, you will do everything to get what you need.
But random encounters can turn things up side down like when my hero, injured and unable to heal himself, got killed by a bee inside our car...
-Fights requires timing and reflexes. You exhaust your heroes when you are in melee.
Zombies are all the same in terms of attacks, however during hordes/sieges events they can fall from roofs or dig out from the ground. The feeling of urgency is really pleasant and selecting weaponry before every missions makes the game rather interresting even if combats are still a bit limited. The progression in general consist into collecting lighter or deadlier weapons and face bigger hordes. Also skills can be trained or bought with supplies.
Note that before and during missions you can select characters loadout and change their strategies.
To defend, chase enemies or flee.
-Very nice graphics. Clear and simple interface. I really liked the fact that zombies turns into piles of rotten blood, brains, livers and skulls that explode when you walk on.
-High replayability !
A really fine catch in the genre, highly recommend it especially with the co-op planned feature !
Hilarious and well-made.
The gameplay is simple but so much can vary on each playthrough.
It's a zombie-survival rogue-like at it's core with amazing local co-op that will have you and your companions laughing throughout.
You can make your own character and choose from different personalities and classes which changes the way the game progresses dramatically.
Great controller support.
Worth the price tag for sure!
Bought this recently and already packed the hours in with my friend in couch co-op. A solid, clever game with legitimately funny writing.
I did come across a few bugs along the way, particularly when entering another room in co-op. The second player would often get stuck or randomly change his weapon when crossing rooms. (Probably due to the ai taking control for this moment) This happens often enough so I don't doubt they're already working on it.
I would LOVE to see more content added in future. Keep up the good work Rocketcat.
