Description
Deadnaut is Screwfly Studios’ second game and follow up to cult hit, Zafehouse: Diaries.

Deadnauts, so named because they’re unlikely to return, must explore, investigate and fight their way through the derelict ships of dead civilisations. Every mission is unique and no two locations are the same. Each ship contains mysterious enemies and hostile security systems.

Manage your Deadnauts’ skills, talents, relationships and flaws – and you might get them out alive.
  • Squad-based tactics: Control five complex characters as they explore, investigate and fight their way through each mission.
  • Character generation: Create back stories for your team, mould their relationships and equip them well.
  • Flexible and complex: Adapt to your situation with an arsenal of weapons and shields, or use stealth, hacking and sensors to move unnoticed.
  • Out of control: Deadnauts have their own fears, motivations and dispositions. Stay in charge, keep in contact, don’t let them out of your sight.

Bleak House.

Nothing much to add to the other reviews except for two outstanding features: A. You can import JPEGs of anyone -friends, family, your least favourite politicians, the bloke you loathe from across the street to use as character avatars. This plays to the game's strength of inter-relationship issues between characters. B. It drips with atmosphere, on the same wavelength as Duskers, a similarly bleak experience. Recommended despite its all too short length. Hoping for more longevity from the developers in an expansion or something.

you will WANT to love it... too bad

the game is full of SO MUCH frustration set by randomness that has no "fairness". "random generated enemies!" okay, cool! You'll fight slow monsters with claws. It'll be easy! Then one guy shoots too much in a room and your entire team dies of suffocation. the next round? Literal soldiers with sonic weaponry (while you still have basic rifles) that can see better than you and you cannot physically win the level at all. So SOMETIMES, it'll be really dialed in. But really, it's a complete randomness. There's NO BALANCE to the random dice throws. I've played EIGHT HOURS and still never once beaten the FOUR LEVEL CAMPAIGN. Think about that. You could be like "this guy sucks, even though he understands the majority of the game concepts, when to move rooms, how to equip soldiers, how to bait enemies" or... maybe... just maybe... the game is hair-pullingly unbalanced. There's SO MUCH potential in this game. But that's just it. It "could" have been great, but after hours and hours you'll find out that it never actually pays off.

Really hard ... but SO rewarding

Deadnaut goes an approach to the game which I really love: You aren't the all-knowing, godlike spectator who is guiding the group, no! It more feels like that the group is knowing what's happening way before you but still needs your commands (or does their own thing when they (seem) to hear nothing from you). I really like it that the style is in a way that you can only imagine what is happening down there. Combining what you're hearing, what you're reading from the log and seeing through movements creates a great picture in my head! But there is also something on the bad side: For me the layout, objectives, datas and all the stuff you need are really confusing. This can still be something which gives great atmosphere to the game but sometimes it's just annoying to search for information while the team is on the hostile ship. The most confusing thing is the menu layout: I think it's really confusing what really the campaign is, where to start, where to end... But still it's an amazing game and after I lost so many teams in combat it's so rewarding to bring all 5 members safe through a mission and the preparation for the next is then even more thrilling!

Un-polished indy

I was able to run single easy campaign. Let's call it tutorial. I probably feel no deepness of ze game. But I can't force myself to give it another try. really. Well, your soldiers are stupid. They won't pick up/review artifact until you click on it, even if nothing happened and they just step over the body - they still won't do anything. If you order them to open/close the door - you will have no guess who will actually do this. It seems like the game just roll them 1 by 1 assigning orders. So they broke the line always. There is some idea of shielded man, but I don't have a clue how can I put him affront by default. The environment/map is quite simple, still game managed to play with you a pixel hunting, when you try to click on overlapping banners and they just run away of your cursor. p.s. closest game is Syndicate Wars. I'd better rerun it, though it was crashing for me (

Sorry attempt at a good idea.

This game is hopeless in it's presentation, flow and mechanics. I can see what they were trying to achieve, but they fell a million miles short. It feels to me as if the game was thrown together for a quick money grab, no love here. Controlling your squad is a massive bag of frustration. Your skills and options are in the region of around two, maybe three. You have very little control over your squad, and the hazards you will face are pointless and quite silly. The game fell out of a lucky bag and is only worth lucky bag money, 50p at the very most.
