Great ideas; Playstation execution

I really like a lot of things about this game from the world feeling amazing to traverse, the gunplay is good enough (but you will notice that you aren't as good of a shot as you think since the game gives you free kills as long as you're in the general direction of the enemy), the story is intriguing and keeps you wanting to get to the end, the HORDES are where this game shines. No other game has this level of zombie badassdome that Days Gone has and it just feels so good to mow down hordes and hordes of zombies. Sometimes just cruising along and the next thing you know you weren't paying attention and you make a turn and there are literally hundreds of zombies now chasing you down. It's a nailbiter sometimes because it just feels so good in the moment. The characters are pretty good and they do a good job of making you like and dislike people (just like real life). Some people I dislike and later come to enjoy and others I thought were cool at the start and I really came to dislike them later on. Overall, the game has a lot of great aspects that make for a good time. The issue that I have with this game is the Playstation aspect. I've quickly come to learn that I don't like how Playstation games play from Horizon Zero Dawn to Days Gone. They just have too much... railroad gameplay. You're traversing the world doing a quest and trying to get to a destination. The game decides you will go this direction that just takes you literally 5-10 minutes of driving needlessly instead of just letting you get to the destination. The game does this in another fashion where you're "controlling" the character, but all you are literally doing is holding the W-key. There's a part in the story that stands out where you literally just hold the W-key for 5 minutes and you don't even have to adjust camera angle- game does it for you. The game is riddled with things like this and I never realized how much I dislike it until this. It's a Playstation design and I don't like it.

Surprisingly good

The open world is very nice, and has the right size for this kind of game, not too big, not too small. The crafting is all right, nothing special, the weapons are all right, nothing special, the characters are all right, nothing special. The story is all right for this kind of game, a fight of survival and people banding together for the greater good (most of them anyway). So why five stars? What let's this game stand out is the atmosphere. Howling zombies in the distance, the creepy atmosphere of a post apocalyptic landscape, looters and bandits that set traps to catch unsuspecting people off guard, the clear nights, the hot days, the rays of the sun that break through the mist in the early morning, the environmental story telling around small tents or in an abandoned house, the growling of a horde somewhere near... The hordes, my god, must be one of the most terrifying things I've ever saw in a computer game. Once they start chasing you, hundreds of them, the heart beat goes up! Later in the game, with the right weapons and the right tactic they become way less scary, but until then I kept my distance hoping they would not notice me. I went in suspecting a decent open world schlock, and left after eighty hours with complete satisfaction. Riding a motorbike has never been more fun. Some minor nitpicks: The in game menus are clearly made for consoles, so don't expect a smooth inventory for example. Your survival instinct highlights stuff in your vicinity, crafting materials for example. But it highlights also stuff you can't pick up because your inventory is full, so walking through a house and don't find the stuff you need can be frustrating. But like I wrote, those are minor nitpicks.

For Those Who Care . . .

I can confirm that the first thing that pops up after you click PLAY for the first time is a window for you to consent to Sony harvesting 100% of your data or 90% of your data. Those are the only two choices. Needless to say, I closed the window and promptly requested a refund. This may not mean anything to most, but I'm only posting this to confirm it for those who do care. And to record another lost sale when it comes to this issue. Not sure if these reviews are time stamped, so in case they're not, this confirmation is valid as of 12/2/2024.

Underrated.

I really enjoyed it. Appreciate the lead actors' performance, and the overall atmosphere. Maybe it did nothing new; but what it did, was well done. Recommended for folks who enjoy open worlds, rpg-lite progressions and smashing zombies.
