Grade-A Zelda Clone: That's a Good Thing

Great game that takes a lot of influence from Zelda, but wraps it in a healthy dose of grown up themes and violence; without ever taking anything too far. Highly enjoyable, and fans of 3D Zelda style games will be pleasantly surprised. The Warmastered Edition really helps bring this title up to date, as the gameplay and story were already good, but the graphics were becoming dated quickly. It was never an ugly game, but now it has a shiny coat of paint and graphical enhancements that really make it stand out. If you didn't experience the original release, this version is the perfect time to jump in and enjoy the world of Darksiders. Includes the Legacy version of the game as well, so you can experience the way it was originally; and the soundtrack, which is a nice addition for free. Highly, highly recommend this one.

Not a good puzzle/action/openworld game

The combat sucks. People say it's like God of War and I also think that combat system sucks. People said it's better and it may be but it's certainly far below games Japanese like DMC or Platinum games. You could say it's like a jack of all trades with how it combines puzzle solving, combat and exploration. But it's more of 7 of all trades. Combat starts with your sword mapped to one face button and your secondary mapped to another. If you don't have a secondary weapon equipped get ready for a lot of one button spam. You have a block and dodge but both are terrible. Dodge does not have nearly enough iframes and you're better off jumping and really it's more of a dash. Blocking would have been great if they telegraphed what moves can be blocked. Oh I'm sorry how am I supposed to know that this big slow attack can be blocked? You can catch cars being thrown at you why would I think this heavy axe swing can't be blocked? So your defense is pretty bad but your offense is quite good. But it doesn't have the creative setups you see in DMC or Bayonetta. It would have been better if you had more moves. A lot of the bosses are terrible. Bosses that are puzzles, bosses that fly around making you unable to do anything, bosses that require you to literally mash one button to do damage. There's one boss fight that requires you to use a portal gun to jump on top of its head to hit its weakspot. You do this three times and you fight this boss three times. I played on the hardest difficulty and found all encounters to be quite easy. You might die a few times but you won't be stuck. The other puzzles are fine to break up the action but a lot of them are an exercise in tedium. There's one puzzle that's the equivalent of one of those sliding puzzles but instead you have to run around pushing carts and hitting levers to get the correct solution. The problem most of the time with puzzles is not figuring out what to do but how boring it is to do what ever it is you need to do. Exploration is terrible. There are no sidequests, no NPCs to interact with other than the shopkeeper and your companion The Watcher but he doesn't give any interesting dialogues. Going back to previous areas just to get an upgrade to weapon so you can make combat easier felt very pointless. Metroidvanias had optional bosses and had wonderful movement to help you through the world. Here you'r better off relying on teleporters. You do get a horse which is cool until you realize you can't use him in a lot of areas. There's really no reason to explore other than you have OCD and need to collect all items. The game is also structured poorly. Early on you meet someone who tells you to kill four Chosen. You would think this means kill them in whatever order you like and the game is going to be nonlinear but you're wrong. You have to kill them in a certain order. The game is far too linear. But the game has good moments. It's story is the best part. If you like Judeo-Christian myth, this game is for you. The aesthetics are very close to Diablo 3 but with more figures inspired by the bible. Cannot really recommend this game because of the setting. You have to put up with a lot of boring things.

Why should i play this?

Starting it up it looked like it would be more an RPG, instead it's a super linear arena fighter game. Hints of it remind me of SoulReaver, but confusing as hell. Monster is super difficult, yet trying it again and end up being super easy when he more or less gets hit stunned. Confusing. Also every room or so some 'event' happens to block your exit so you can't backtrack (not that i would want to). Not getting more than an hour into it i ask myself why i'm even playing this. Nice voice acting, nice graphics, but not compelling to me enough to even want to play it. Also found 10 languages installed for it, and deleting all but english and frees up nearly 7Gb. Why can't it ask if i want to NOT install the languages i'd never touch, or have the languages as separate packs/patches so i don't download everything i don't care about? I'm not impressed. To me just doesn't seem fun.

Solid game, not what I expected though

First of all there are a few technical issues with the game. An example: I want to play the game in English, though I don't use Windows in English. Whenever I quit the game and start it again, the language of the game changed back to the language I use under Windows, which is quite annoying. A few friends recommended the game to me and I gave it a shot. It turned out that this is a cool "button-spam" 3rd world action game! You kill basically all the enemies you encounter, with a combination of a button click, spamming a button 2/3 times, or clicking the jump button and spamming attack afterwards. The combat isn't really anything I really like and the character and inventory system aren't great either! What is great about this game are the cut scenes, the world and the story. Also in my opinion this game is really not enjoyable with M+K. That's why I switched to my controller after the first fight. Overall a funny game for a few hours per day. Nothing spectacular and probably not a game I will remember 2 months after I finished it.

Boring and derivative

I don't have much to say, because I've tried to play this game twice and in both cases gave up due to simple boredom. The combat is very uninteresting (as someone put it, you have 3 moves - square, square square or square square square) and the setting rather generic although Diablo-esq world in 3D is rather neat. There are surely some interesting elements in the game, flying a dragon was definitely cool for example but that was just a short intermission. If you can't get enough of 3rd person action games - quite unlikely in this day and age - and you like the idea of the setting, you can give it a shot when it's on sale. At its standard price of 20 € years after release of the original edition, there's a big chance you've played or can play something similar and better.
