1 star because I can't give it zero...

My disappointment is cultivated in 60+ hours devoted to Darkest Dungeon. I tried to persist to the ending, which I hoped would provide a small measure of satisfaction and allow me to write a review as complete as possible. That time has been an odyssey spent in assuring that the myriad of unforgivable offenses were not instances of bad luck, but repeating consequences of bad game design. I like a challenge, but DD is not challenging. A challenge is outwitting, outplanning, and outmaneuvering a capable foe, not spending hours recovering from flawed game mechanics that will cripple any top-end party, regardless of preparation, action, or response, at frequent and randomly-generated whims. The worst of these is the surprise feature. Somehow, your party can get surprised by enemies approaching from the front in a hallway, or in a room where you expect battle, and when that happens your group gets reordered. Party position prohibits certain abilities from being used, which results in fighters unable to hit and healers unable to heal until you've absorbed 2-3 rounds of enemy action while re-rearranging your party. If you surprise the monsters, it's not much better. After your free actions to start the battle, all foes act to finish the round, then they all go again to begin the next round because they are all faster than you. GOG - please do not call this game roguelike. The dungeons are a collection of four-space hallways culminating in one-cell rooms - unworthy of 'randomly generated' or 'replayable' tags - and deaths of fragile, uninteresting, ineffective characters can hardly be considered permanent when the next group of similarly indistinguishable characters is standing by after each mission. I'd love to warn my fellow gamers in full detail about all this game's flaws but I'm limited to 2000 characters. The most telling remark I can give is this - I've played hundreds of RPG titles over the years and this is the only one I've ever asked for a refund for.

Artificial Difficulty + Real Difficulty?

Good, but not $25 Good. Far from Great, even though the Art/Audio is Great. Game Design is overdone. They tried so hard to make this game overly difficult, that it hurt the game design... without making it more difficult! 1. Got repetitive too quickly. Did not get very many hours out of this before it became too repetitive. Worth $10-$15, but definitely not $25. 2. Artificial Difficulty Gone Overboard. This game tries to be difficult so hard. If you play it, you will understand what I mean by "They are trying too hard." It's not actually that difficult, just needlessly oppressive. 3. Balance Issues. In terms of game balance; Some abilities are entirely useless, while certain setups are extremely overpowered. For example, all abilities to reduce stress are pretty much useless to use, especially in the longer dungeons. By using a stress reduction ability, you get anywhere from -3 to -8 stress, and then immediately gain +8 to +20 stress because you didn't use a better ability instead, such as an overpowered stun or a superior attack (anything is better, really.) If your character is already insane, the only way to reduce stress (you'd think) is by using a stress reducing class/ability. Wrong. In any one battle, if one person is already at 100% stress (which is very easy sometimes), even if you spam 2 stress reducing abilities over & over, you will gain a significant amount of stress even after reductions. The superior path is always just to stun-lock the enemies while you slowly kill them. "How many stuns can I get in my party?" along with "Which of the 2 OP healers should I take?" There are plenty of strategies to make every "difficulty" entirely pointless. Your characters can die, but it's almost pointless for them to because they are so easily replaceable...So who cares? A single dungeon run with a disposable party (where you just retreat the moment you can't do anything anymore) will give you enough money to replace any heroes & all upgrades very easily.

Buyer Beware

Darkest Dungeon is a good dungeon crawling game and I own it with all dlc on Steam. That being said this GoG version is outdated and no longer supported by the Developer. For some reason, RedHook studios seems to hate GoG and its users. They have made a business decision to launch Darkest Dungeon 2 as an Epic Store Timed Exclusive. If this was a just world, they would launch Darkest Dungeon 2 on all platforms(including GoG) and keep updating this game. Sadly, they took the quick buck and don't care about what their customers think.

I really wanted to like this game...

Darkest Dungeon is a difficult rouge-like with RPG elements and turn based combat. Sounds like match made in heaven for me, because I love these kinds of games. Unfortunately few things hindered the gameplay to the point where I'm really struggling to get back into it. You have surely seen a lot of positive reviews, so you know the good things - beautiful art style, amazing narrator (arguably even better than the one from Bastion), really interesting and responsive tactical combat system, etc. The game is great in those regards. Unfortunately few things make it barely playable: 1) insanely high entry barrier - if you haven't played Early Access version, you're gonna suffer. First 50 hours will be a learning experience only and if you won't give up on the game you'll get to the next problem which is 2) grinding - your heroes will die. The problem is that you have to level up next people to take their place and it takes time. Time that consist of going through the same dungeons with low level team which is even more fragile than the buffed one. 3) RNG - you can lose battles, because you were unlucky. This I can't forgive, skill should be the determining factor. Not RNG deciding that your 5 first attacks miss because of crappy dice rolls. 4) permadeath - this is what you expect out of difficult dungeon crawler. But not in the situation where you invested like 20 hours into buffing these 4 characters that you flat out lose because RNG screwed you over in one or two battles. Why can't I revive my character that I've invested so much time into? Why can't I heal him during the battle (medkits of some sort)? No, he's dead, all your efforts go directly down the toilet, enjoy 20 hours of getting back to the place you've been before. I really wanted to like this game, but it doesn't look like it rewards skill. It's a repetitive memory test with infuriating luck based combat that can throw 20 hours of your life down the drain in one string of bad luck.
