Dark Reign + Expansion

I remember playing this classic in 2001 or 2002 and really enjoyed that. I actually Purchased it in the past due to the construction kit and instant action capabilities. Story line is great. I was honestly not sure if I would purchase this from GOG but I am sure glad I did. I was hesitant because there are a lot of reviews that have people saying it does not work properly. As of this writing it works great, music plays as it should, videos work, same with instant action and the construction kit. It does work on Windows 10 which I am using. I have yet to have any issues with it. I am aware that GOG uses the 1.4 version (If I recall) rather than the 1.7 ver you can find online. However this is better as I have tried 1.7 before and you can play but without music and still kind of buggy. They got this classic to work perfectly on my Modern System and cannot thank them enough, to not only bring this back but to have it work perfectly as If I was back in 2001.

#EN I already own the game plus the expansion pack on orignal CD. Sadly it was super hard to get to work on windows 7 and impossible so far on windows 10. Found this gem on GOG now and its running like the original back then. No sound glitches like in my workaround. No crashes. Everything works! :D Finally i can enjoy this glorious piece of RTS again. Thank you Activision and thank you GOG! <3 Also you can just copy paste the different sound files (like german in my case) from the CD to the game directory! #GER Ich bin bereits Besitzer des Original Spiels mitsamt Addon auf CD, von damals. Leider war es nicht ganz einfach das ganze auf Windows 7 zum laufen zu bekommen und auf Windows 10 ging dann nichts mehr. Habe diesen Schatz jetzt endlich wieder gefunden hier auf GOG und es läuft wie das gute alte Spiel damals eben lief. Alles Funktioniert! :D Endlich kann ich wieder dieses glorreiche Echtzeitstrategie Spiel geniesen. Danke Activision und Danke GOG! <3 Ausserdem kann man die alten Sprach files von der CD in den Spiele Ordner kopieren, dann hat man das ganze wieder auf Deutsch!

When this game came out back in 1997 it was truly ahead of its time. You were able to set waypoints, the units could be set on different strategies and behaviours. There are only a few games offering such great features, even modern games mostly lack this. The gameplay itself is pretty fast and offers many different strategies to win the game. The sides are also pretty well balanced and provide pretty much fun. The base defense turrets are pretty strong, but with a good tactic it is possible to get through. The units are pretty well done and provide much diversity. When you select many units and let them move in one big move there might be perfomance probs and the platoon is seperated and only regroups at the target point, which might let you use many units. It`s also not good, that the Togran Side simply combines Freedom Guard and Imperium, I would have wished a whole new side. Luckily there is the "Togran Empire Mod" available for this. The Missions in the original game are different and in the end pretty challenging. You can play each mission with both sides, so winning a mission with Imperium and than defeating it with Freedom Guard is fun. The Missions in the expansion are also in some cases nice to play but in total much weaker than the original ones. Modders have various opportunities for easily implementing new units,blogs, maps and missions. Hopefully there will be an option to get the gog version working with the mods available at www.darkreign.ws. For playing online you should also get the new DROM client there. Hands down, this is my favorite RTS game and always enjoy my time spended with this jewel of a game.

Game crashes or does not launch in Windows 10

DR is a classic 90s RTS with controls that can rival modern RTS. It had features like powering down your buildings way before games like Command & Conqueror 3. My only downside is that some missions can be difficult earlier on. There was a recent update from GOG that made it run better on windows 10 and fixed the saved bug.
