Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
No matter WHAT YOU TRY this game is not compatible with Windows 7. I am sickened by Cog.com for falsely advertising that this could be played on a modern operating system when it is ONLY compatibel with Windows 85/89....
Don;t waste you money, and time unless you have an ancient PC with a very old Windows on it. I am going to be forced to get a refund for this piece of scam garbage!!
I recommend waiting until the game is patched with a CD crack. The game prompts for a CD to be inserted when trying to run the game. If you try to run the game it asks if the CD is inserted. If you select No, the game opens. If you try to play the game after launching it, it prompts to insert the CD. Recommend waiting for a patch
I haven't played it enough to say definitively that it's a terrible port, but the screen scrolls far too quickly and turning the scroll speed down doesn't make a difference... until you cross the magic threshold, when it suddenly stops going too fast and instead slows to an unplayable crawl. There is no middle ground.
This was one of the first RTSs I played back in the day and it was a very enjoyable game. Had a nice feel and look to it, however it was a quite unforgiving tough game at times.
Occasionally you would just get stuck in a mexican standoff, not able to progress. Creating units, they get destroyed, create more, they get destroyed etc.
Maybe my tactics were off!
While the game play does sometimes suffer (one of the ultimate strategies, at least against the AI, is always "scout to get line of sight, then bomb with artillery"; the campaign missions become repetitive), it has many redeeming qualities.
This game had a lot of firsts, including full 3d terrain, everything having an effect on line of sight, terrain type effecting speed of different units differently.
Each of the sides are rather different from one another. There are many units and buildings that no other game I can think of have. This is also one of the most mod-able games ever released.
What really makes this game still keep interest is its tweakable AI that you can assign to each unit. For example, you can set a unit group to "skirmish" to go out to find and harass enemy units, and set them to "low damage threshold" so they'll automatically retreat to a hospital when hurt.
I've been looking forward to this coming to GOG. The CD versions never worked in modern operating systems well.
