Description
In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!

From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”

  • Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
  • Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
  • Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.

Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.

Well, I had great fun!

I did try it back in the day, but stopped before even getting past the swamps. Finally going through Daikatana in 2018 with the latest patch I'd say it's pretty darn good. Sure, it still crashed twice, and the companions got stuck to the point of having to reload a handful of times, but those were just annoyances. There's a lot of cool stuff in this game and, the first and final episode, which seem so hated, really reminded me of Sin. Part of that is definitely down to the modern setting and high-tech fortress infiltration setup, using terminals and finding side routes to get around. Got a serious break-in/out and heist feel to them with that music! The soundtrack as a whole was far better than I expected, really driving the whole thing. The middle two episodes has a lot of Hexen 2 in them. I mean, you've got Greek and medieval Norway, which could just as well have been in that game. Also, Daikatana as a whole has that type of destructible object and item pickup "puzzles" that Hexen 2 is famous for ( ok, to some it's infamous for it, but nevermind that. ). Lots of secrets too. Will definitely replay this one down the line, as I missed a ton of 'em ( also, I wonder how it works without companions. ). It may have been seen as outdated at the time, but this game looks great as long as you dig that chunky Quake1-2 engine style. That said - what is up with the screenshots on this page? Makes the game look terrible when is has so many beautiful locales. Bummer. Finally, there's plenty of cool weapons exclusive to each episode. So a highly enjoyable old-school shooter with a lot of imaginative ideas then. Some annoyances here and there really doesn't break it. Not anymore at least.

Fun once you use unlimited saves

Patch 1.3 makes it so much better and closer to what it should have been from the start. Enemies placement is still pretty bad so don't feel bad if you enable unlimited saves

Flawed but Fun

I want to start by saying I finished the game on the Ronin (easy) difficulty after hearing all the issues the game has, and I feel like that was the correct move. I didn't use any kind of patches for the game. Just played it straight up the way you get it when you get it from GoG. The Bad First - Your AI companions are pretty dumb (which was the reason I choose to play on easy to start with). You will need to babysit them like crazy because they will run headfirst into battle and die, get stuck on everything and nothing, and fall of the map just for fun. It did lead to a few headaches. I did have some crashing issues but not a lot. The weapons (while many and unique) really don't feel very punchy and have no feedback leaving every weapon to feel lifeless and melee combat doesn't feel at all. The game does start off pretty slow. It took me a few levels to start to get into it. Could not change video settings without the game crashing. The Good - The game has the perfect mix of campy B movie time travel, terrible voice acting, and crazy enemy types (sharks, mosquitos, mechs, prison inmates!?!?) which all blend together to make for a pretty good time. This is what kept me coming back for more. Level design was pretty solid, and each area felt mostly unique and fun to explore. I did get hung up on some of the puzzles and fetch quests (I eventually sold out and used a walkthrough guide) which ended up padding some of my gameplay time. I enjoyed that each time travel section had its own pile of weapons to play with to help keep from same weapon fatigue. Even though the weapons don't feel great to use, there is a ton of variety in the weapons. With all of that said, is Daikatana one of the worst games I have ever played? Not even close. Was it a letdown when it released back in 2000? You bet it was. If you are looking for a new boomer shooter game to tackle over a weekend, I feel Daikatana deserves a look but keep your expectations low and I promise a goodtime

not that bad after all

Thank god some users pointed out, that there is an unofficial patch 1.3. This is a great improvement. I liked it somehow, this old school shooter. The only real pain are those damn sidekicks that always get stuck and are just plain pain in the ass. It is true that chapter 1 isn't that good but after that it is quite ok and it is really weird with all those different time lines and different weapons in all those time lines. Follow this introduction https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=282094762 and you can have a good time with it. Had about 26 hours fun with it.

Needs a remake

Daikatana is a pretty groundbreaking title when you think about it. It was really the first game that attempted to be a co-op FPS/RPG hybrid long before this became popular with games like Borderlands. It was just a shame that the technology at the time wasn't ready to handle the ideas that Romero had, coupled with a really delayed development. But I can see where he wanted to go with the game and that he really tried pushing the FPS genre forward, and personally I find the game more fresh and interesting than Quake 2 as it has a lot more variety to it. It also has a lot of voice actors from Deus Ex which I love so it's not really that bad of a game, it just has some glaring flaws that I think if had been fixed, we would've had one of the most original titles in years. Definitely a game that is begging for a remake...
