Description
In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!

From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”

  • Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
  • Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
  • Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.

Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.

It's ok

When it was new I couldn't play it because it crashed constantly. Now 25 years later it was time for a revisit and - it's not the big thing. But if you disable the AI companions, necessary because they get stuck everywhere and if you use the 1.3b patch (no crashes, widescreen, a bit eye candy, native 64bit linux binary) it's payable at least. Some levels are even really good. There are much worse games out there. But in the end it feels unpolished e.g. no proper weapon feedback, AI of the enemies,...

Daikatana

I actually had alot of fun with this game once I figured out how to approach it. The main annoyance is the sidekicks, Miko and Superfly. At the beginning of each level you need to tell them to stay, STAY!! Then clear the level and go back for them. I like the Romero episode, chapter 3 if I remember right. It seems more like what Doom 3 or Quake 2 should have been. They should have left out the sidekicks and just called it Hexen 3.

Not bad at all (patch 1.3)

This is not a bad game the ending is levels are kinda crap but all in all not a bad product in the long run you are better off useing auto saves as a means to keep the game where you are at had a ton crashes due to trying to load hard saves other then that no other probelms arrived.

I liked it

First, I have to mention that I couldn't play this game when it came out. Now, I've finished it the first time... and I LIKED IT! I know, this game WAS very late, 3 years after Hexen 2, made in a very late engine, but comparing to the 3 years eralier debuted Hexen 2, which I've played a lot, this game can be much more entertaining than H2. It starts very slowly, the first part is definitely boring. But after the first time travel, the story starts to be interesting, the quests are consistent, the gunplay, the weapons are quite good. With the narration and the VERY few NPCs, this game was better for me than Hexen 2. It was simply better to play it. The sidekicks are funny and the level design is very logical. I must sayí that I've played it with the 1.3 patch, without it, I can imagine this game can be annoying as hell (especially in the last chapter).

Extremely frustrating and not fun at all

I have really believed into John Romero and I have really looked forward, when Daikatana was only 1.39 € during summer sale, so I gave it a try, besides the crushing opinions of so many players. Well, unfortunately, they are absolutely right. I personally do not care about the old graphics, as I know that there are plenty of enjoyable games out there, whose graphics aren’t good looking at all either. Yet, when your first level starts in a green swamp with a green background, in which you have to shoot dozens of small mosquitoes and frogs, while hurting yourself with your gun, when you try to shoot it underwater, this is already a true fun-killer. The level design is pretty linear and very often you have no space to evade the enemies shots. Even with the easy difficulty and your health fully boosted via the neat RPG system of the game, chapter 1 is incredibly hard, even for experienced FPS-players. Yet, very often the enemy robots are stuck at a corner of a door, so you can keep shooting at them, while they cannot find a path to you, which, unfortunately, makes the game very laughable. Although you got plenty of weapons, the only 16-pages-sized manual gives you no clue how they actually work and that they are most likely to hurt you, while trying them out. Mostly, in chapter 1 I just used the Ion cannon, which you find right at the start of the first level. Yet, if you accidentally miss your target, it hits the wall and can fly back right toward you, eating your health away. Be prepared for a lot of frustration, might it be due to the terrible AI of your two comrades and your enemies, the weapons that harm you just as they harm your enemies or the extremely dark and often too narrow level design, which gives you rooms filled with enemies that just tear you apart within a few seconds, as soon as you open the door to enter. Luckily, GOG uses the 1.3 patch, which allows you to save and reload any time you want, otherwise Daikatana would be an even more frustrating mess.
