Some very nice world building. The amount of minor details and environmental storytelling is staggering and it makes the Night City a great place to explore. The only thing missing in it is the feeling of scale. When I stand in citi centre in London I see that it's huge. Lots of people walking around, cars, noises - everything is alive. That feelinf is absent in Night City.
Main characters are well made, but lack the screen time to get the player to really know them. I had a feeling that every time I was close to connecting to a side character the game pushed them to the side and never spoken of them again.
Shooting and general combat is pretty satisfying. It allowed me to follow my favourite route of pistol weilding gunslinger and still be able to kill most enemies without many issues. The biggest flaw was the lack of ammo. I had to buy new clips almost before every quest. Enemies are unfortunately bullet sponges. I expect a headshot to kill my target in one shot - two if they have a helmet, but in this game I needed to empty a whole magazine to kill them.
Story has a terrible pacing. The intro is based on your chosen backstory and it literally takes 20-40 minutes to complete. After that every character meets in the same main storyline and follow it to the end. The only extra thing you get from you backstory is an occasional dialogue option, but it doesn't benefit you in any way. The biggest problem is the story finale. It comes out of nowhere. Just as I was getting into the story, the game shoved a third act at me and the game ended. I finished the whole thing in 30 hours and that was with me following many side quests in between the main story. Really disappointing.
Driving is absolutely terrible. Just use fast-travel or download mods which tweak the handling of vehicles.
Overall a 3/5. The game had a potential, but was clearly rushed at the end.
Never played the unpatched version and this was my first time venturing into the Night City.
Pros:
- It plays nice. It just feels good to fight, hack, sneak and do missions.
- Non Main Quests are either fun, have good plotlines/stories, or both. You'll get to do a lot of things, from helping a dude whose cyber penis is glitching to fix it and helping a bartender to win a bunch of street races, to helping a rockstar find his groove back, helping one of the few good cops to save his nephew from a kidnapper, or helping an AI to deal with his "children" acting up.
- All builds work. You want a hacker gunslinger? You can be one. You want to be a fist-puncher ninja? You can. Katana/Shotgun wielder? Sure.
Cons:
- Still quite a few glitches. Nothing particularly gamebreaking, but a lot of unpleasant ones, like suddenly not being able to hack because your hacking menu just not popping out (reloading helps).
- Vehicles are unpleasant to control.
- Bosses don't scale with your level, so if you are level 50 (maximum), then one of the Night City's legends, who serves as a final boss, will be killed by you in a matter of a few moments.
Neither pros nor cons:
- Main story is not bad, but not special either. Quite a few good moments, but side quests outshine it.
- Game has a crafting system, but it is locked by otherwise the most useless stat and you'll have to either pump it or never see a few powerful weapons. And no, there are no "blacksmiths" whom you can pay to do it for you. But you can upgrade the weapons that you get from drops and as quest rewards.
Overall:
A great game brought down by execution. A solid 3.5/5 game, but I am bumping the score to 4 because I've genuinely had fun with it and because there is still time to fix what's broken.
I'll be blunt, I don't get why some people love this game so much, and I don't think this is a very good game.
Just over two years after it launched, it's still a very pretty game. The graphics are top notch and it's one of the few games out there that I feel like I might actually be missing something because my AMD card can't do proper ray tracing without butchering performance.
But, aside from that skin, there's just not much here. The story is okay, but the only reason I'm finding it compelling is that it seems to be the only way you can actually find anything to do in Night City. If I don't play the main quest, nothing seems to be happening. Side quests seem to be few and far between, and wandering around the city randomly you won't add much else to your to-do list. Pretty much nobody you come across interacts with you meaningfully, and almost every door you find is locked tight. The few people of any consequence that you come across, like the various fixers, don't really get fleshed out in any meaningful way, and nothing you do seems to really matter. Hacking and sneaking works, but isn't really very useful anywhere compared to just going in guns akimbo, and dialogue options always seem to boil down to the same outcome no matter what approach you take.
Everything is just so, sterile. The whole city is dead, like nobody has ever actually lived in it.
I guess my biggest complaint with this game isn't that it's necessarily a bad game, it's just that it doesn't really offer anything interesting. It's an open world game that lets you run around a big city, but it's a boring city. It's a city filled with violence and corruption and opportunity, but you always feel like you're an outsider to all of it unless the main story forces you to participate.
At the end of the day, the thing that condemns this game isn't the terrible, buggy launch, it's the fact that even after all the effort to fix it, there just wasn't really anything worth fixing to begin with.
