Came to play this game with high hopes because the witcher 3 was amazing. There were parts of the game that keep me engaged but I was really looking forward to the game being over, better off playing witcher 3.
TLDR: beware before buying, no surround sound on home cinema setup with optical out, even after two years and countless patches.
Long text: I was somewhat hyped for Cyberpunk since I'm a huge fan of the Witcher series, so you can guess my disappointment when the state of the original release got known publicly. So I decided to wait.
After two years, I figured by now it should be a stable, enjoyable experience and got the game during the black friday sale. Starting up, it looked promising, nice graphics, good performance, great immersive surround sou... wait, why is the surround sound all messed up? Why are voices and other directed sound only routet to the front speakers, even when they are very clearly behind my player character? Are you freaking kidding me?
Cyberpunk is the only game of over 400 games in my library that does not work properly with my setup (external sound card with optical output to AV receiver), regardless of configuration. CDPR support is not answering, the internet is full of this problem, there is a thread in the official support forum where people are describing the exact same problem, but no solution. After two years. Every (!) single other game works witout flaw.
I got a refund and I know it is overreacting, but CDPR lost all credibility with me since they don't seem to apropriately care about the technical side of the game.
Overall well worth buying.
Nice detailed world and loads to discover. If something like a door is unpowered then likely you'll be back to that area for a sub quest so just ignore it initially.
You can mostly play like a FPS if you want with 'regular' weapons and add them over time as you need them. Except Skippy the talking gun whoch is worth the laugh, just add the mod that makkes him non-lethal as he likes to fire fopr fun when you are trying to sneak around or have no kill bonuses for the current quest.
Forget the youtube 'secret' this and that videos as most are near quest or other content and items scale to current level so early pickup is wasted.
Most of the bugs are gone though some odd things will still happen. Only 3 or 4 crash to desktop in 100 hours.
- If you have radio volume turned off then some quest dialogue is missing when in cars with quest River the video he shows is set to radio volume, also random lines from the Peralez family are the same when in their limo.
- Car physics are lacking but have apparently improved since release. Camera angle has high/low but makes little difference. plus since its low and follows behind turns are low visability in the city.
- Random NPC walk in the air above roads at about knee height. Some objects do the same in out of the way areas.
- Some body dump bins are facing 90 degrees and when you use them you get clipped or stuck
- Some Mods have same properties of 5% no matter what quality.
- Some wepon mods apply their effects when they shouldnt making a few weapons really overpowered.
- there is no qiuick skipping the sex or intimacy scence like you can with dialogue so if they start you have to let them run.
- turning off the copyrigh music makes the songs very limited and you cant turn it off asits from radios in game.
This is the most damning evidence of the pitfalls of crunch culture, and why I hope to never see CDPR do that again. At launch, it was a disaster of bugs, poor optimization, muddy graphics and half-baked gameplay. Two years later, what you have here is a beast of a game that plays and runs beautifully on the recommended hardware. HOWEVER, that we had to wait two years for the game to actually live up to the hype is not something that should be tolerated, especially after a SIX-YEAR development time. I'm not sure whether there was too much ambition on display, but hopefully CDPR reins back ad bit and sticks to polished games in their means, because when they do it right, they hit it out of the ballpark.
Long story short, if you waited to buy the game, now is the time. If you bought at launch, hopefully the current game soothes those wounds.
I actually love this game but the latest hotfix causes it to crash on launch. In retrospect, I should have downloaded the installation files individually instead of being lazy and using GOG Galaxy.
Is it that difficult to provide access to older installation files for just such an event?
