I've met a bug or two along the line of the very little time I've played so far. But when I go in the mission where I drive the car for the first time, when I reach my destination the game always crashes. I literally can't play past that mission if I want to. Even the new patch didn't seem to fix it. Every time it crashed I've sent a report, so hopefully it will get fixed. Please fix it soon, as for me it is literally unplayable at this moment
This would have been a 4/5 review if CD Project Red did not promise us the moon, the game is OK but is far from what I imagined after listening to the advertisements. I assumed this was already what they had before the delay in March.
Rig: Intel i7 6700K (stock), Radeon RX 480, Crucial MX300 SSD
Settings: Ultra graphics (blur off) on 1080p
Good things:
- Night City is pretty well designed, I didn't find much repetition and it does feel alive. On ultra settings there are enough NPCs to make the city feel full.
- Good graphics on 1080p. Game was really sluggish in 4k and dynamic resolution setting didn't make things any better.
- OK story, nothing special really but it's not bad.
And the bad:
- The game is full of useless things that I wish CD Project Red did not spend time developing because the systems don't impact the actual gameplay, for example:
- Customization, 0/5:
- - You can not change your looks after the game starts. (WAT??)
- - Clothing is a choice between looking good and having decent stats, my character looks like trash.
- - No 3rd person perspective, you can't see what your character looks like anyway.
- - No gun or car color customization.
- No new game plus.
- Terrible driving physics.
- There is little enemy variety so all of them drop the same weapons, 80% of drops are D5 SMGs.
- Weapon and armor mods are useless. They are one use and getting new gear always seemed better than moding existing ones.
- Crafting system is useless. To craft you have to spend perk points that can also increase your DPS. I didn't have enough skill points to invest in any crafting.
- Netrunning also requires skills and is not a replacement for a gun, again useless with the limited perk points.
= I got maybe 10% of skills by the end of the game, why are there so many?
- Grain filter, chromatic aberration and motion blur on by default. The game looks much more alive with all of the blur options off.
- Graphical glitches and slow texture loading sometimes.
As an idea, this game is amazing. The devs really reached for the stars and tried to bring us somthing gargantuan. However, I think they bit off more than they could chew. As the game currently stands, it is Skyrim levels of bugginess. Along with this, some of the mechanics (namely the wanted system) are broken. This could have been an awesome GTA replacement, but as it stands it just isn't. I have confidence that these problems will be fixed over the course of the game's life, however this could take a long time. I am glad that I have only been waiting a year for this and not seven like some people. I really think it would have been in the best interest of the game for CDPR to have given it a few more months in dev. If you want to experience the game the way it deserves, wait until the devs actually finish it.
If you plan on playing this game, you might want to upgrade your computer. My current setup can play most of the games I like at 1440p high 60-144fps. With this game though, I couldn't keep a perfectly stable 60 even at 360p low. I eventually found a balance of settings (around 720p medium) that gives me a playable framerate and Xbox 360 esque graphics. My PC is just a touch less powerful than a PS4 Pro BTW. I cant imagine what the experience on the base Xbox One is like.
I'll try to remember to change this to a 4 or 5 star when/if CDPR finishes the game.
Paying full price for a game that you cant play is not fun. The game should not have been released in this condition. The fact you cant even start playing the game is unacceptable for a game release. Very dissapointed in CDPR for releasing the game in this condition. Hopefully the fix it quickly.
