A Flawed Gem That Deserves More Dev Time

I wrote a much longer review than can be put here with the character limit, I guess. Just finished my first playthrough clocking in at well over 100 hours. TLDR: -Played on a decent rig, didn't have game-breaking bugs, enjoyed the gameplay for the most part -Side Missions and open world feel quite shallow, more often than not -Beautiful core story that will stick with me Abridged: Cyberpunk 2077 has been a truly bittersweet experience. Released too soon, but never soon enough. Weighted down by bad management decisions and by insanely high expectations from gamers, initially when I loaded it I was in awe, taking in the scenery around me, the sheer scale of the city, the beautiful crafting of the main story missions. It was when the open world part of the open world really got exposed that I saw how empty it really was. The AI around me, the lack of meaningful small interactions (in a way that, for instance Red Dead Redemption 2 handled brilliantly) and side activities... the essence of most side missions boiling down to "go to place, kill bad guys..." I'm still glad I played it. That mixture of awe and disappointment, as with most things in life, is just gonna be part of the experience. I recommend this game to anyone who loves the genre, and anyone who loves good storytelling. If you're hoping for the next big revolutionary step forward in gaming, however, you will be disappointed. I sincerely hope this game sticks around, and never fades away, and that, like Witcher 3 and No Man's Sky, the more time passes, the more it becomes that thing that everyone praises. I hope that it can be saved from the poor management decisions that ultimately led to disappointment... much like the choices my V made in the end. I'd like to think that she, and CDPR, deserve one last chance to correct their course.

I love this game but...

Management was bad. Crunch is bad. Unfinished, bug ridden game is bad. I get that. Lets put that aside for now. I'm going to review this game as a consumer playing a game. Just so you know, I did not install the hotfix patches and played this game from start to one ending. Nothing was ever game breaking during my playtime. Guess I got lucky. What is a video game really? It's a form of entertainment. Well, I certainly was entertained with not only a Cyperpunk themed Witcher 3, I got a Mad Max and Ghost in the Shell theme too. I enjoyed the story. Sure, it was linear. but thats irrelevant to me. A book can win awards, and those are almost all linear. Soviet Womble once said: "you don't get a second "first" impression. I was impressed with CyberPunk 2077, UNLIKE SOME DUMB PS4 GAME WHO'S ONLY PULL IS IT'S STORY, BUT POOPED ALL OVER THAT ANYWAY. (opinions differ of course) So, tl;dr. I love this game for the same reason I despise that dumb post apocalyptic game on the PS4 that won all those awards it didn't deserve; many of which should have gone to that Greek Myth game. Nova to the Dev team for Cyberpunk 2077. Your management can be zeroe'd for all I care however.

Solid 10/10

Despite all the (mostly unfair) criticism, the game is just awesome. What did you expect, GTA? SIMS? It is an awesome action RPG, strongly influenced by The Witcher 3. Story is good, shooting is good, stealth is fine, even driving a car is good. Sounds and soundtrack are top 11/10, just as graphic potential (currently running with 1060 6 gb and i'm amazed even with 5-years old card). Night City is the best city ever created in games so far. I'm sure the game will develop in right direction. GJ, keep up the good work.

Requirements

Even on the low end pc side the game is very forgiving when it comes to performance. My specs I5-6400 2.70Ghz 8Gig ram SSD win10 64bit GeForce GTX 970 8 gig Oddly It runs better for me then GT5 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Only big bug I've had so far was killing a mission target via run down with a car as side missions are triggered by phone call that only comes when you exit a vehicle near target.

hard to relate - well worth the effort

it takes a long time to relate to night city – and to understand why: in my third run just starting to get the hang. surprisingly it's not about rpg vs. looter-shooter. nor about the npcs or the the city being too small (for a mega-city). first i felt the city was too sterile, but it’s not: proper dirty and meticulously designed. It is YOU, your character – V. – that is sterile: as a corpo you don’t even have a bar to hang, somewhere where the barkeep knows what you need before you do. as a streetkid the city should be brimming with memories & people you know. it’s only now – playing as a nomad – that V. finally feels in the right place: lost. you are a newbie-greenhorn knowing nothing and nobody. AND you also need to know the game mechanics – namely hacking – to properly enjoy the game. BUT you only ever need these particular game mechanics once you start playing on (very) hard. at lower difficulty levels neither the choice of weapon nor anything else (stealth mode, hacking) really matters: as long as you are not getting caught in a cross-fire of several people you should do fine. so once you start NEEDING ping and a better cyberdeck – fast! – the game starts to open up – a bit. unfortunately the makers have decided to use the matrix-look (crt-green) for everything digital. so night citie’s cyberspace feels very 1990s rather than 2070s. but then again, once you get the hang of what breach protocol, quickhacking, daemons, kiroshi and mikoshi do you may finally start to relate to a game that is as much a promise for the future as an unfinished masterpiece for what it currently is. ps: please guys: you are a bloody MERC on the trip of his life. so you want to go to strip clubs, spend the night with one or two handful hookers, go fine dining with a bunch of guys and/or girls, and elegantly/naughtily dress them before fully(!) undressing them. the non-existence of serious adult entertainment in a city of sex & crime is a MAJOR immersion breaker.
