Cultures 1
Before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, the Vikings set out on their own journey of discovery and possible looting and pillaging. Having accidentally stumbled upon the Americas, they began their remarkable adventure in a new and unfamiliar land. Welcome to Cultures, where you can actively shape the destiny of your people as they struggle to gain a foothold on unfamiliar shores. Success hinges on your ability to balance achieving your goals with the needs and desires of your clan. It is up to you to nurture and guide your people: determine their names, occupations, marital partners, and, eventually, the gender of their children. The happiness of your settlers is paramount to achieving your goals in this exploration and construction-focused RTS.

Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard
The Viking Bjarni whiles his days days away in an idyllic village on Greenland’s coast until a dark prophecy knocks on his door. In his premonition, Bjarni witnesses an epic struggle between the forces of Good and Evil. He must journey to battle the Midgard Serpent. Get ready for a quest that will take you through Europe (including England and Byzantium) and the outskirts of Baghdad. Your journey will unite the four great western cultures with a common purpose. But how long can it last? Inspired by Norse mythology, the real time strategy title, Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard, combines elements of simulation, adventure, and role-playing to immerse you in Bjarni’s quest to defeat the fabled beast.
  • Includes Cultures and its sequel, Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard.
  • Over 200 hours of absorbing god-sim gameplay with extremely detailed characters, stunning environments, and vast landscapes.
  • A unique overarching story with strong adventure elements shines through in both games.
  • Features more than 30 different trades and professions all with their own in-depth job and skills systems.

Good old classic

Cultures are slow town-building games with a lot of micromanagement. As is typical of German games, building your town is the main focus and although there is soldiers and combat, it is an insignificant component that is greatly simplified. You do need exuberant amounts of patience to play these as they're even slower than the Settlers games, but they're still more worth your time than anything you can find for your mobile. The GOG version, although the DRM has been removed, has several technical problems that makes it rather frustrating to attempt to play it: - The default volume level is excruciatingly loud and the music volume slider doesn't work - it's way too loud no matter what (even the mute option doesn't work). - Although you can increase the resolution to modern levels (though you're still limited to 8 and 16 bit colours), the setting isn't saved and the game returns to 1024x768 whenever you exit it. - The shortcut keys are wrong - several of them don't correspond with the manual and are set to non-alphanumeric keys, which makes it guesswork to figure out what keys they actually are on, and since they can't be reconfigured makes them unusable for anyone with a Nordic keyboard or any other keyboard layout that uses 3-5 characters per key (because the game uses character input instead of key scan, and doesn't respond to Shift/Alt/Ctrl etc key-combinations). In other words: You cannot use things like the speed control key which makes the game basically unplayable - it's way too slow on normal speed.

Very nostalgic!

I am very biased when it comes to playing Cultures2 because I remember hours and hours of play as a kid playing sharing the PC with my sister and my mum and dad. Must have been around 12 when we got the game originally and it is absolutely awesome! Cultures 1 Loads of fun especially if you are into older games. Its unique and has a really great vibe. Great plot that requires you to imagine the rest and the social interactions of you're people. Cultures 2 Okay this is where I am going to have to stop myself from gushing about how awesome this game gets. I still love playing single player especially The Great Hunt where you have to race against time to kill as many wolves before the Byzantines to win whilst those pesky Byzantines try to destroy your poor little village. I will keep playing that one after winning and have loads of fun building my village into a city. The great thing with Cultures is you get to decide on where buildings go, what you're people eat, and where they sleep and generally care for their welfare. It is hard not to get attached to certain villagers and the crazy thing is you recognize them by their voices and clothes and hairstyle. Name them at your own peril though! You shouldn't have favourites because if something happens to them it will break your heart! Their remains will remain on map as a permanent reminder that you failed in your paternal duty. The great thing with this game is that even after the game has been won you can keep playing for as long as you please so the game play is only limited by your time. Love that instead of giving you a game that has done the imagining for you this game involves you to imagine what you want and fill in the spaces. The graphics quality on imagination is infinity so you can just go wild. Before long these little people will have invaded your life and you will struggle not to think about them. Overall it is one of the best games ever!

Cultures Addict

Had to delete the winmm.dll file to get it to play on my old xps xp laptop. Have been playing this game so long that when i began there were not instructions in English Have played cultures 1 every year for 16 years love it. Fighting is actually challenging In Cultures 1 since you must be prepared when attacked and it is my favorite in the series for this Reason. In Cultures 2 while the Graphics and overall game is improved it is less challenging Except for the snake people the very last challenge in the main campaign which is Difficult to beat. In Cultures 1 Must use F2 "funspeedup" cheat to fast foward when needed Havent played Cultures 2 in a couple years but as i recall it has a fast forward feature. Totally Addicted to the first two games never tire of playing them The later 2 versions are very Easy imo especially Northland and more appropriate for children, beginning Gamers, or Cultures fans like myself Came here to get Download Version for my old laptop However if using a disc once installed the Disc is not needed for Cultures 1 If playing Cultures 2 from a retro disc you will need the Disc & a code

Old school games

First time I played the first installment was at the age of 10, and when I held the Gold edition CD in my hands it was probably one of the most memorable days of that time. The first installment is a bit more hardcore than the second, but both games feature very deep game play mechanics. Basically its the settlers but on a smaller scale, you still have production chains for food, goods, ore, tools, etc. But in this franchise the success of your settlement depends on your ability to fulfill the needs of your people, because they will not work or do anything if they want to eat or sleep. The second game features a lot of quality of life improvements along with an expanded tech tree and an improved combat system. Overall the second game is a lot easier in my opinion and less hardcore than the second due to tweaked mechanics. (you are less likely to starve your people). I have completed all campaigns in both games, and can certainly say that both of these games deserve their place in your library if you enjoy a fun micromanagement approach to building your settlement.

Interesting concept, but dull

Mediocre. I like the concept of a game diving into the history of Vikings meeting the Native Americans long before Columbus. The game is fun at first when you're learning the mechanics, but it gets dull. There is little to no combat, but it isn't detailed or challenging enough to be a good sim type game. Imagine the old Warcraft games (not WoW, just the original one) with building the usual buildings and farms, etc. but only occasional combat. You can go through 5 levels without a single battle! The rest of the time you're just patiently watching your little viking village develop and waiting, and waiting, for the next upgrade to be available, or to have enough resources gathered for the next building, etc. It just didn't work out that well in practice. I don't regret paying for it. I got some enjoyment out of it, but didn't bother finishing it.
