Description

Cultist Simulator is a game of apocalypse and yearning from Alexis Kennedy, creator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea. Play as a seeker after unholy mysteries, in a 1920s-themed setting of hidden gods and secret histories. Perhaps you're looking for knowledge, or power, or beauty, or revenge. Perhaps you just want the colours beneath the skin of the world.

In this roguelike narrative card game, what you find may transform you forever. Every choice you make, from moment to moment, doesn't just advance the narrative - it also shapes it.

Become a scholar of the unseen arts. Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Craft tools and summon spirits. Indoctrinate innocents. Seize your place as the herald of a new age.

In this 20-40 hour game, you'll:

Combine cards to tell your own story in a rich, Lovecraftian world of ambition, appetite and abomination. Corrupt your friends. Consume your enemies. There is never only one history.

Found a cult, dedicated to the Red Grail, or the Witch-and-Sister, or the Forge of Days. Recruit Believers and promote them to Disciples to serve as burglars, researchers, cat's-paws. Use your disciples to keep you fed - or feed on your disciples.

Unravel arcane, unacknowledged mysteries. Translate grimoires and glean their lore. Locate and pillage the Star Shattered Fane. Penetrate the realm of the Hours, and win a place in their service. Perhaps - if you are very cunning - you may even glimpse the Mansus.

Outwit rivals, investigators and the increasingly suspicious Authorities. Your own altered Appetites may force you to act abominably, but your Cause must not be stopped.

Transcend death with a story-driven legacy system. Perhaps your inheritors will complete the Rite of the Crucible Soul. Perhaps they'll find peace in a pleasing career. Perhaps they'll bring the Dawn.

The reason no tutorial is provided

Is because once you know how the game works, it becomes extremely boring. I hate the two-minute timer to get an acquaintance -- and there are ~30 of them, not to mention that sometimes you get a rumour card which would generate Notority if explored for another minute (which means that the 2-minute waiting was for nothing unless you could deal with the Notority). The apostle legacies and DLCs (excluding Exile, which I haven't got into) only make it worse -- for example, by asking you to repeat the exact same recipe for 7 times because obviously 7 is a sacred number :). Oh and in apostles you'd have to recruit the same people and raid the same vaults you've likely done 20 minutes ago, like wtaf? I was also utterly disgusted when I finally read about how Alexis Kennedy abused women and refused to acknowledge it. I regret giving my money to such people.

Magic and Mystery

While the core gameplay is fun, the real magic is in the mystery. The game will not explain to you how any but the most rudimentary mechanics work; you will need to figure that out for yourself by experimentation. If you are careful, failed experiments may only result in minor setbacks such as decreased sanity or health; if you are careless (or unlucky), you will die (or worse) and find yourself beginning a new game. But death often brings the consolation of interesting lore tidbits, or of starting the game with a different backstory and different starting resources. The other part of the mystery is the lore. I recommend *not* using the wiki until after you have enjoyed the game thoroughly. Instead, keep a journal, take screenshots of interesting things you find. Remember that not every source of information is equally reliable... If you are willing to invest the attention and mental effort, the secrets and hidden truths of the world of Cultist Simulator will slowly yield to your determined investigation. And that sense of discovery, of having pieced together at least part of the puzzle for yourself - that really is quite magical. Practicalities: The main game has many hours of content, with three primary paths to pursue and several variant endings for each, as well as 'New Game +' options that unlock when you successfully complete one of said paths. The paths are mutually exclusive, so you'll have to try them one at a time. The DLCs add new playstyles with unique mechanics, new endings, and many additional details about the game's lore. The Dancer DLC in particular adds a lot of content, and the just-released Exile DLC looks like it will add quite a bit as well. The Ghoul DLC reveals a bit about the distant past of the setting, while the Priest explores the power of doors... Please note that Christian players may find the Priest DLC and the Grail ascension in the main game a little uncomfortable, as they borrow and alter Christian symbolism in particular.

My obsession

I have played HOURS of this game, and I love it. If you're like me, exploring the mythology of the world will be a fascinating experience of discovery for you, and I think it neatly captures what the 1920s occult themes that people often call "Lovecraftian" perfectly. If you like that sort of game, it's well worth your time and I don't feel like I've wasted my money. That said, certain elements of the game are particularly grindy and similar, such as building up your stats. There's also some RNG, which isn't crippling, but if you're trying to build a particular cult, and you can't find anyone with the appropriate aspect, it's really irritating, but it tends to involve looking for a new recruit, waiting and waiting and waiting for the heat to die, find out that you got the wrong recruit, rinse and repeat ad nauseum or until you get the guy you wanted. Still, I felt a real sense of victory when I managed to beat the game, and the RNG can sometimes create wonderful anecdotes to tell people. I think it's a really great game with some very frustrating elements that limit the long-term replayability. With that caveat, I do recommend it.

A narrative experience

woke in an unknown life with simple needs and simple means. I lived. I died. I lived again. Through it all, some esoteric calling pulled me forward. Then an end. Happiness found in work and a simple life. But I could not rest. Not when hints of power sprinkled across my hours like snow on bleak obsidian. I read. I painted. I grew a following. I adopted a lover. All of these experiences wound across my psyche, fighting against the dread and infamy. Still, some thing whispers of power unseen. Perhaps tonight, I will discover the covered path left to me by entities unknown. Or perhaps, I will succumb to the vagaries of my own visions, unable to recognize the rest of the world any longer. But if it all comes to an end, something will wake me up again tomorrow. Weaker. But wiser.

Feels like a beta

Bought the game earlier today and have played it for 5-6 hours. Conclusion: I regret buying it. I think there is a nice game hidden somewhere, but as of now it needs a lot of rework. My biggest problems are: UI: Text is difficult to read, the zoom doesn't help, no way of organizing the "cards" Game: Still unsure of what game I am playing - no help, no manual, no tutorial, nothing to set me on the right track - it is not exploration. It is a design flaw that needs to be fixed. The writing is good. There is some nice concepts with hunters and death being part of the progression in the game (I think - again, no documentation is given). If you are just looking: Wait 8-10 months and then give it a shot.
