If you wish to take up modding and learn LUA scripting language then ... you could get started with watching some youtube tutorials for free without wasting any of your time and money on this pile of manure. All designers and other devs that actually made playable games at Paradox have long since left. My salute goes to all lost heroes. ('-')7

Best. Game. Ever.
Started a game as the young Charles (not yet so great). Created the Empire of Francia. Lived. Ruled. Conquered. Died. Protected the last bastion of Christianity in Leon. Groomed heirs. Changed laws so that the sole daughter heir can inherit instead of some random duke in the realm. Got two other kids later, one boy. Then died. Heir boy is 5. Not good. His elder sister died clutching her heart. He almost fell off a balcony. A man asked him to follow him into the dark to play. Nope. Finally he fell off another balcony, assassination succeeded but his uncle got revealed as the one who ordered the death of a child. The last remaining alive member of the family is the weak 5 years old girl. She is the emperor. But enemies everywhere. A 5000 strong elite army guards her at the capital. Uncle arrest attempted, but he escapes, half of the empire is in flames now. She wins. He is rotting in the prison for the rest of his (short) life. The girl survived. Weak, torn, frightened, but alive. Got crowned by the pope. Best story generator ever. Best. Game. Ever.

This edition is not worth it
Now base ck2 is free and is a solid game on its own, if you're interested in the game you may play that first to test the water (although lots of rules are different due to lack of DLCS). Most DLCs contents are in the other edition, this one gets some bonus that aren't quite fitting. This edition gets multiple out of place song. Viking would be singing in modern English about Viking God and random pop songs that make 0 sense in a medieval world would be used, I had to disable these. For the game, it's made to be played as independent. While playing as a vassal, eventually you'll rise up and hit the ceiling where either others vote you to be a king/emperor somewhere. Even if you decide no longer want to be a king and want to abdicate to play a duke/count, it would require tons of works. Your liege do not proselytize "their land" so 25 uprising with 6k troops pop up every month that break the country, anti player aggression so NPC give up their whole war just to chase you who only raids 1 county 5000km away. None friendly NPCs also seem to get a higher resistance against incidents, so you don't see as many as maimed/incapable liege that have their head hit in a war. Your dynasty die every frequently if you choose to recruit them to the warrior lodge. The duel system also have 200+ personal combat constantly losing to -20 so your character gets hit then die/cripple in meanless way. The balance has also become very poor in late updates where crusade would win most of the time. You may as well attack 2 to 3 minor tribal county that join the war and will win the top prize. Lots of viking like Halfdan Ragnarsson/ Ubbe also may get mass converted before even giving a fight, which makes Alfred the great doesn't feel that great. Designating heir like William the Conqueror did in history is impossible in the game. Overall just play the free edition first.

Talking about game and price
After more than 1.200 hours in Steam I can tell the game is very good, it's also a difficult game because of the mechanics and all the things you have to pay attention. About the price, with a 60% sale (101 euro) if I wouldnt have bought the game and all its DLCs when were released in Steam I wouldnt think twice about buy it, as I have it in Steam I'll wait until a 75% sale. Some DLCs are not important to play the game while others like Holy Fury, Conclave, Reapers Due or Monks and Mystics are DLCs you really would need (having Holy Fury the only difference between have or not The Old Gods is the bookmark of the Viking Age 867)
