Cossacks II: Battle for Europe:

Let the battle begin! The Cossacks II: Battle for Europe add-on continues the renowned Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars game. It depicts the rather short historic period of the Napoleonic wars. The Napoleon wars changed Europe forever, leading to the formation of empires and putting an end to almost one thousand years of constant strife between small states. The game provides mass-scale battles between thousands-strong armies of the nations involved in conflicts during this period. The theatres of operation introduce France, Britain, Austria, Russia, Prussia, Egypt, and three nations not represented in the original game – Spain, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (Poland), and the Confederation of the Rhine.

Cossacks II: Battle for Europe reconstructs in detail the soldiers' uniforms weapons and architecture of each nation. Each nation's army has its unique units and possibilities. The game includes over 180 units 190 buildings and 1200 flora and fauna elements. When developing the combat system the peculiarities of early 19th century warring were taken into account as was the value of formations provisions and troop morale. Tactical tricks utilized by military commanders of the time are fully reflected in the game. An "honest" system of bullet and cannonball ballistics based on physics is an innovative addition to the Cossacks engine. Other engine features include 3-dimensional landscaping which creates realistic-looking scenery and towns and impacts combat tactics. For example the firing range of a subdivision of soldiers or a cannon positioned at the top of a hill is greater than the firing range of a unitstationed on flat terrain.

Unplayable on Win10

The game doesn't work on Win10. Do not buy it! When I want to run this game the message box with DirectPlay installation opens. If I enable the DP installation it fails and the game shutdowns with error code 0x80071A90. If I ignore the DP installation the game crashes immediately without any feedback.

Only on an older system apparently

I have to add my "It doesn't work" to the rest of the reviews. The first anthology was great but I can't even get a scenario to load. I tried several different configs and it locks up every time it starts a scenario. Tried on a Windows 10 machine and my mac via Wineskin trying lots of different configs. If you're looking for something good that works, stick with the first anthology and save your money on this one.

Unique formation-based RTS

Amazing games, deserve a remake. The gameplay is based upon formations, timing your attacks and managing your resources via stationary points that can be captured by the enemy. The campaign missions can last long because AI just throws enemy formations upon you quite fast, you have to play fast to overcome it. The Battle for Europe TBS map is awesome and my favorite part in Cossacks 2, you can play with many nations and the outcome of the campaign is determined on fast Real-Time battles with the troops you initiated the attack with. The downside is that most of the units between nations are reskin, you don't have many strategic choice as to how many or what type of troops you carry and the map is quite small with many nations just surrendering to you when you snowball it... I hope in a future remake they rework it, add more unique units and more areas to make it more challenging and last longer. Cossacks 2 has also EXCELLENT soundtrack, albeit few but memorable tracks. Is a game that truly deserves a remake to bring it to modern age (because you can and may encounter some technical errors...).

Stutter Issues On Windows 10

Game stutters heavily and runs worse than other store versions of the same game. Hopefully this can be resolved with some updates soon. The stutters make the game unplayable, therefor avoid until fixed.

i almost liked it

pro: it has some interesting features. new features compared to other games and to cossacks 1 -you have to use your shots carefuly, not too soon, not too late. you have to withdraw strategicly. -morale is very interesting. -being forced to conquer villages for resource generation is weird. not bad, just weird, compared to cossacks 1 -as far as i got in the campaign it is ok con: -campaign crashes. "there are too much handlers" and crash to desktop. so save often. at some point i gave up and used lower resolution. it worked for a while. but at some point after 6+ crashes in 30 minutes, i gave up -no autosave (that i can find). this really hurts in combination with the above -no way to speed up / slow down the game speed (that i can find). when waiting for troops to recover in numbers and morale, to go from place to place, it would be useful -no way of knowing the name of each building. sometimes i just park the troops outside a building and just wait for them to refill their number. then find out (because there are no replacements sent) i did not capture that building yet. or it is not the building that sends replacements. i recommend you play cossacks 1 instead of 2. i am sorry. it is close, but so many problems and i have not even scratched the game properly
