Description
Alien life has been discovered... and they’re angry.

A team of scientists experimenting with a small, metallic object brought back from Mars used it to open a gateway linking our world with another deep within the top-secret research lab known as Corridor 7. The thrill of discovery was short lived when hostile alien creatures began pouring out of the gateway and into the facility. Now it’s up to you, a lone Special Forces agent, to enter Corridor 7, eradicate the alien invaders, and close the gateway before the invasion takes hold!

This terrifying sci-fi first-person shooter from Capstone Software has you venturing deep into the dark and twisting test chambers of Corridor 7 to combat a hostile takeover of Earth. Hideous monsters from another world have scattered throughout the facility. Good thing you’re fully loaded and prepared to take them on. It’s time to give these alien beasts a killer welcome party they won’t soon forget!
  • Leave no survivors as you blast through the complete selection of 46 levels from the CD-ROM version of this classic shooter.
  • Eradicate the marauding alien invaders with an arsenal of nine devastating weapons.
  • Use your infrared visor to spot traps, or track your enemy in the dark with night vision.
  • Can’t get enough? Take on the Presidential Level, which is different each time you play!
  • Crank up the volume and get lost in the atmospheric soundtrack.

A weird game from a weird time.

Corridor 7 was the first attempt by the infamous Capstone Software to cash in the FPS mania generated by the release of Doom. At the time id Software was happy to license out their old Wolfenstein 3D engine to anyone who wanted it since Doom had completely blown their previous work out of the water. What followed was a solid attempt at trying to make a more Doom-like game in the aged ray casting engine with some misguided attempts to innovate in a few places like adding invisible forcefields that are more irritating than entertaining. On the positive side some of the enemies are genuinely kind of cool looking but most are uninspired. The levels themselves are bland even for the limitations of the engine and most are amateurishly designed mazes though unlike Wolfenstein 3D you are given a tiny, almost useless map to help you navigate. Most of the weapons feel awful but they do get the job done. Enemies tend to be extremely dangerous and since they're hitscan like Wolf 3D the game is full of cheap and unavoidable deaths. Still there's something really appealing about this scrappy little game that keeps me from giving it one star. It feels more earnest than most of Capstone's cash-in titles and an RVGFanatic interview with programmer Les Bird reveals that they really did put a lot of effort into it. It feels like a Wolfenstein 3D fan game in a lot of ways and while the end result certainly isn't a good game it's definitely a playable one provided you like Wolf 3D style gameplay. In a post Doom world though, Corridor 7 never stood a chance. I can't really recommend this game unless you're obsessed with retro FPS titles and nostalgic for them like me, especially when the Blake Stone duology that's also available on GOG is a vastly superior sci-fi take on Wolfenstein 3D's gameplay. It's still an interesting piece of FPS history that I'm glad to see preserved and it's way better than Capstone's ugly follow-up, Operation Body Count.

Wolfenstein Engine FPS by amateurs.

Capstone are now infamous for the abominable Tekwar Build-Engine FPS. Before that, they made a few Wolfenstein engine style FPS that were basically B movie level: Operation Bodycount being perhaps the worst. Terrible sprites, sound effects, level design, everything basically. Corridor 7 is not far off this. I've owned the game since release, played it a lot back when my PC could not play Doom, then never gave it another look when I upgraded. But perhaps its low rent sci-fi ambitions still hold some appeal? Even if they do, you'll encounter very repetitive, maze-like level design, random and pointless item placement, weapons that are useless, near-invisible pain triggers and more. Perhaps the best part of the game is its music, as both the MIDI and CD soundtrack actually have some quite memorable "game-rock / EBM / techno / industrial" pieces. Not amazing, but curious. Don't rush to this. But, if you do still harbour some liking for old school Wolfenstein type FPS games and haven't played Corridor 7, I'll be "kind" and say that for a couple of quid it's... barely playable B-gaming from one the 90s most infamous game developers.

My personal blast from the past!

I played Corridor 7 for the first time when I was 11-12 years old. Then I did not go through it to the end. Of course, the game is not for everybody, but personally I like its gloomy atmosphere. Now I'm 35. I bought it as soon as I saw it and went to the end in 9 hours. Started a new walkthrough on higher difficulty. Those who do not care about the graphics, but who care about the atmosphere, will come.

Best of the worst.

Capstone the "Pinnacle of Entertainment Software" has a checkered history of mostly bad games. Corridor 7 is probably the best of a bad batch and certainly a lot better than Body Count. Corridor 7 had a few interesting gimmicks like night and infrared vision for spotting hidden enemies and also featured a map where Wolf3D didn't. Capstone also managed to kluge together some haphazard multiplayer. Since the game is one big bug hunt and Wolf3D is pretty limited on map variety to can get boring pretty quickly. It's a game you played back when because there was nothing else to play and one you probably play now because you have some nostalgia for it. The soundtrack by Joe Abbati is also very interesting and contains some very good tracks making great use of the old FM Synth cards.

One of the better Not-quite-Doom clones.

Proudly displaying "Enhanced Wolfenstein 3-D engine" on the back on the box, but released the year following Doom, it SOUNDS like Corridor 7 would be dead on arrival. That Capstone Software logo isn't doing it any favors either, but SURPRISE, this is actually a pretty fun game! The premise of involves you in government facility wiping out a set number of invaders per level, which varies depending on the difficulty setting you play. The game features a fairly diverse set of monsters for you to fight, and an equally diverse set of weapons to dispense them. It does nothing to reinvent the wheel, but what it does do is offer a fun experience.
