Had a progression-limiting bug happen. I tried to restart the mission through mission select and found that my map progression had somehow carried over despite the revert. Fast-travel points had already been unlocked and story triggers hit, but the quest progression hadn't carried forward. Essentially, I had no way to move forward. This seems to persist through new games and installs. At the moment the game is unplayable for me.
A very standard third person action adventure set in the, quite intrigueing, Alan Wake universe.
Gameplay is...well, everything you'd expect from a third person actioner, they added a light looter shooter aspect where you can upgrade your guns with mods you loot. The usual weapon types ; Regular, Sniper, Shotty, Grenade launcher.... It's all decent, works fine. You got some powers too, telekinesis, levitate and stuff like that. So...gameplay is solid, fine, ok
Story is fun with good acting, music is solid, graphics are solid. again, game is solid.
Now technically, despite the graphics being nothing THAT special the game is very demanding, I am playing in 1080p on a 1080ti so that is a bit ...unusual. So the port seems to be a bit unoptimised.
The game crashed for me every few hours, not too bad, but still, for a YEAR old game still to have that, very disappointing and it also makes another bug worse.
Achievements (if you care, if not please just skip and don't complain to me how achievements are stupid and unnecessary, thank you) are bugged, many of the cumulative achievements (find 120 collectibles, cleanse 25 control points, do 15 side missions, etc) don't work as they should. The game resets the counter on reload. So the only ways to get them are playing through the whole game in one sitting (remember the crashes I mentioned, yeah, good luck with that) or use cheat engine and find the counter address to change it. Even after that, the get all achievements achievement does not unlock.
Having 99% the game (missing that one achievement :P ) I am a bit suprised about all the praise the game got. Now don't get me wrong, it is good, but good in like 8/10 territory, not a solid 10 many review sites gave it. I actually like Alan Wake better to be honest.
Recommended, but curb your expectations.
The game itself, is fantastic. The problem is, I encountered 2 game breaking bugs. For such a polished game, it's a real shame that game breaking bugs haven't been fixed.
My hardware:
AMD 5600x
RTX 3090
Here are the bugs;
1. There is a particular boss, where it causes your computer to crash. After 4 tries and having it crash every time. I tried fixes, such as changing Physx from GPU to CPU in Nvidia settings. The only workaround was to enable the "Assist Mode" and turn on one shot kills.
2. On the "Face the Public Enemy" quest, there is a game-breaking bug where the Control Point cannot be captured. I tried re-loading the game several times, quitting the game, re-loading. Finally, I was forced to choose to load the mission from the main menu. This reverted me back all the way to when I first took on this mission. I had done several side missions inbetween, I lost about 6 hours and said screw it and ended up watching the ending on YouTube.
There is no way to make a manual save, you're forced to rely on autosaves, for better or worse.
Maybe your experience will be better, but it was really disheartening to play such a critically acclaimed game and have it break in such terrible ways. I'd recommend the Steam version if possible, it probably doesn't have these issues.
I would refund but I'm well outside the window at this point.
I had a saved game from a couple of years ago that was barely a couple of hours into the game. So when I returned I decided to start a brand new one to remember what had happened. Except if you try to start a new game it completely breaks the entire game with no warning.
As I tried to do the missions everything was already completed, boxes were already opened before I could get to them. I couldn't unlock new abilities. I've uninstalled the game three times, deleted all my local saved data, deleted the cloud saved data from GOG as well. Still completely ruined. Who would design a game where you can't start over with a new game? I found people online complaining about the same issue from years ago so clearly they have no plans to fix this ever. Would not recommend this game to anyone as my money was wasted as I can't finish the game now.
