Description
Conquest of the New World puts you in control of a native civilization or an expeditionary force from one of five European countries. Compete against other players in the hopes of establishing control of the New World during the sixteenth century. Not a game that simulates the actual discovery and colonization of the Americas, Conquest of the New World is generated at the beginning of each game and each New World (and game) is therefore unique.

Your job is to explore the New World, establish thriving colonies, produce and trade goods and eliminate your enemies or defend your claims from your opponents. Each player sets his own objectives for each game. For some players, winning the game may primarily involve finding lots of new landmarks in the New World and establishing many colonies.

The Deluxe Edition adds several new features to the game. Primarily it adds the option to create and play scenarios and customize the world. In addition, nations now have different bonuses, several special resources and discoveries have been added and you can form trade alliances with other nations.
  • Interesting gameplay featuring exploration, management and combat
  • Infinite replayability on customizable, computer-generated worlds
  • Discovering the uncharted during the Age of Exploration era

Worth It

In Short: It's worth its price. In Longer Words: here is a game that asks you if you're smart enough, clever enough and if you have what it takes to build up something successful in the New World. The game engine is unfair because the AI cheats without shame and the user interface is incredibly clunky. On the other hand, almost every single thing, be it a unit or a resource or a building, has its own info box. You'll likely spend a long time reading it all and marveling at the yearly newspaper that brings you the news from the Old World withs its popes and its kings. Chances are good you will rip your hair out and ragequit the first few times your cavalries get swatted like flies and the other colonies are these grand things that make your colony attempts look laughable, to say nothing of the untold clever mechanics that are in no way touched upon, such as how populations and taverns play a crucial role in colony combats. At the same time, once you have lost a few battles and raged at the gosh-hecking-darn settler unhit's sheet inability to set up colony where you found a great spot, you will have a lingering feeling if triumph that keeps haunting you noce you get the first colony set up. After that, its siren song tempts you to come back. How about making a new map? How about just a little demo fight? How about just a short game to see if you can make the Spanish Crown proud of your success? I sincerely recommend this game with five full stars. It is unintuitive and several shortcuts could have been made but for a game of its time it's good enough- in fact Without the manual you are left the very exact Ship Creek that the

A Classic Reborn

I got the original (non-deluxe) version of the game in 1996 and when I played it, I didn't know what the hell was going on. 17 years later, I'm more mature and now that I've played it again, I still don't know what the hell is going on. ^_^ But it's still a fun game and I love every minute of it!

one of the goat games

I was recently in my basement looking around when I came across the empty box for the COTNW and instantly thought about all those afternoon and nights playing this game. so much so that I took to google in an effort to see if I could purchase it somewhere. thankfully GOG had it in their collection and for 5 dollars, really it wasn't a question-i had to buy it. Cant wait to get back to playing as the natives trying to stave off the impending colonists, while trying to find my own piece of the pie.

Blast to Play

This is a great game if you enjoy long-term civilization construction. Lost many an afternoon and night to playing this when it first came out. Reminds me of a stronger Colonization. Can become a little dull in the late-game if you don't play aggressively.

A legend in gaming experience

This year of our lord, 2024, once again I return to playing this epic classic. There are many descriptions here of the game, its mechanics and features. No point in repeating it, but there are some unique things I would share about this game. Colonization of the Americas today is sometimes considered contraversial, especially when you consider whats going on in the world now. But it makes for an epic time and place for historic gaming in a specific sub-genre that has been dreadfully neglected. There are just a few selections after all this time. Sad. The new world this game creates for each map is unqiue, engaging to explore, and is gigantic to most maps in the genre as a whole. You really get the sense of a massive world, with varying geography, and things to discover. Graphics never made a game good, ever, but I do appreciate that for its time this game was cutting edge. The unique uniforms of each nations soldiers, including the First Nations people is quite a nice bonus indeed. The game allows for much customization so that you can configure it to the way you want to play which is really rare. Crushing your enemies is not the only way. Victory points, which can be seen as prestige, allows you to setup games and factions that reward different types of gameplay such as diplomacy, exploration, wealth, etc. Its most awesome. Like another game in this genre you can claim independance, but unkile the other games, this game doesnt end with it. Its just a phase of the bigger picture if one chooses it at all. Name another game that allows you to play the First Nations people? I can think of two titles. Sad. Its very rewarding and satisfying to unite your kin and show those Europeans whose the boss. I can't recommend this game enough, its amazing to this day. It has lots of depth and keeps me coming back year after year.
