Description
Conquest of the New World puts you in control of a native civilization or an expeditionary force from one of five European countries. Compete against other players in the hopes of establishing control of the New World during the sixteenth century. Not a game that simulates the actual discovery and colonization of the Americas, Conquest of the New World is generated at the beginning of each game and each New World (and game) is therefore unique.

Your job is to explore the New World, establish thriving colonies, produce and trade goods and eliminate your enemies or defend your claims from your opponents. Each player sets his own objectives for each game. For some players, winning the game may primarily involve finding lots of new landmarks in the New World and establishing many colonies.

The Deluxe Edition adds several new features to the game. Primarily it adds the option to create and play scenarios and customize the world. In addition, nations now have different bonuses, several special resources and discoveries have been added and you can form trade alliances with other nations.
  • Interesting gameplay featuring exploration, management and combat
  • Infinite replayability on customizable, computer-generated worlds
  • Discovering the uncharted during the Age of Exploration era

Not as deep as civ but addictive

I had this game when it came out originally and I just retried it off gog. Still amazing. You basically start out on a map with a settler and some explorers. Then you found a colony and can build it up, raise an army and go conquer. It's turned based with turn based tactical battles in between so it has a civ feel with a bit of heroes of might and magic to the battles. I love building up my cities and founding new ones and the tactical battles are great. The game is simple enough you can jump into combat right away, or you can be a builder and try to upgrade all your structures, it's up to you. It's definitely not as build intensive as a civ game. The interface is a bit clunky, sometimes your units don't travel to where you want them to, but it's easy to figure out. Also this gold edition has a map editor so you can setup your own custom games.

Hi all, finally some good old fashion strategic old school game, at first you do have to give it some tries before you get the hang out of it, but after playing for an hour or so, you are on your way to the top ! A++ for this good old fashion game !!

Captivating; Breathtaking; Inspiring

I received Conquest as a Christmas present in 1997 when the deluxe edition came out. I remember needing to upgrade my computer from a 386 to a 486 just to get it to load battles in less than 15 minutes. Conquest is the first game that I can remember enjoying so much (I was 15 at the time) that I literally played it through the night without sleeping (Fallout and Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far would later add themselves to this list). The next day I had a raging fever, slept from noon until 6pm, and woke up fully recovered. Conquest draws you in like very few games I have ever played in a long career of PC gaming (which began right around CD-ROM was invented... if you ever played a game called Astronomica, we should be friends). It combined for me all the essential elements - strategy, age-of-muskets combat, city-building, and good old-fashioned butt-kickery. You absolutely must play this game.

The most replayably fun game ever

I can't tell you how many games my friends and I have played of Conquest and it never gets old. Part of me wished for a redone version, but having the original playing on new hardware is even better. Worth this price every day of the week. I'll be fighting for my colony's independence soon and naming some silly discoveries.

I can't say I see the appeal

Despite numerous glowing reviews I cannot recommend Conquest of the New World. The goal of not cheating by the AI is commendable but it (perhaps among other things) makes turns very slow. Most of my turns ultimately ended up having mainly to do with repetitive shuttling of resources from one colony to another. Research is a dull affair, with the player being able to build only one military college and that said facility producing solely quantitative rather than qualitative improvements in existing units. Overall, the experience was rather lackluster in the end.
