Played this back in the late 1990s and recently bought it from gog and played it again...was somewhat surprised how fun the original Commandos (and the expansion pack) still is. The gameplay is simple yet brilliant and the level design is superb. Pretty much a flawless game, though some people might be put off by the difficulty. But if you're interested in this type of game and like a challenge, you can't really go wrong with Commandos 1.
Boom!
Imagine an explosion, 30 metres away from you. You've now got the guards' attention, but the escape shouldn't be too hard. Green Beret skuls back into the bushes, and the guards are left standing with nothing in sight.....that is until the Marine jumps out and takes them both down
Commandos is best described as a mix between RTS and RPG, and in essence follows the gameplay styles of modern "succesors" such as Robin Hood.
You control a team of commandos whose job is to disrupt enemy operations behind lines. Your team is comprised of specialists.
The gameplay is immersive and challenging. This is not a game for people who are not ready to dedicate a fair amount of time to the game; it requires a lot of patience and planning, as well as a fair bit of luck. However, this can be immesnly rewarding when you have cleared a whoele warehouse of guards without their colleagues discovering their grizzly demise. The main downside to this is that the game is EXTREMLY tempermental; one mistake and you're dead
Controls are dandy for basic actions, but are incredibly fiddly to coordinate an attack.
Using the mouse, you can control your characters and their items. The keyboard also contains a few handy shortcuts.
Graphics are good, but notgreat for modern standards.
All in all, patience is a virtue, but if you're playing Commandos, patience is a killer!
Commandos 1 is arguably one of the best games ever made. As a child I spent countless hours figuring out new tactics to finish a mission without alarming the German patrols. It's not an easy game - it was made in a sort of golden age of video games when the most successful games needed the player to THINK. You needed to memorize hotkeys and keep your fingers constantly on Ctrl+S (quick save), because it was just one bad move and your whole plan was blown. 10/10
The game is difficult but gives a lot of satisfaction, when you complete a mission. Each member of your team has unique abilities needed to complete the various challegnges that game sets up for you. The game also has a unique atomsphere, like a series of old war movies that were never made.
