Hi, here is solution I found online to make in game videos working. I tested that on my Win10 and now videos are working perfectly fine in both Commandos games (Behind Enemy Lines and Beyond Call of Duty).
1. Install latest K-Lite Codec pack
2. Open 'Codec Tweak Tool' (you'll find it in 'K-Lite Codec Pack' folder in Start menu)
3. Click 'DirectShow Filters' in Configuration section
4. Click 'LAV video decoder'
5. Click 'Formats' tab at the top
6. Find and DESELECT 'cinepak'
7. Click OK and close Tweak Tool.
8. Enjoy the games (most important step :-) )
Short way to do the same.
1. Install latest K-Lite Codec pack
2. Open 'LAV video' (you'll find it in 'K-Lite Codec Pack' folder in Start menu)
3. Follow steps 5-8 above.
For anyone trying to launch this game but gets the direct X 5 issue, this is what worked for me:
1. Go into the game files: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Commandos
2. Change name on "comandos.exe" to "commandos.exe"
3. Right click the shortcut on your desktop and change the "Target path" to to the newly named exe file which should be something like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Commandos\commandos.exe"
4. Start game again
Hi the fix to "DIRECT X 5 NOT FOUND" is:
Download DDrawCompat in Github and replace
in the game folder. Rename comandos.exe to commandos.exe for BEL.
Download the Commandos BEL/BTCOD Resolution Hacker and apply
Work in Commandos: BEL and BTCOD.
I am using Win11 x64.
TESTED IN THE GOG VERSION.
¡Hola, el juego funciona perfectamente aplicando los pasos señalados, si tiene problemas con el encuadre del juego después de aplicar el hack de resolución, ajuste con el teclado numérico -+ y a disfrutar!.
I played both of these games quite some years back now. Beyond the Call of Duty is not really an expansion pack as it was a stand-alone installer that didn't need the original content.
First off, the graphics are a fixed isometric display. Only in Commandos 2 did it become 3D rotational. This does mean that sometimes there can be obscured vision but it's not that much of an issue.
Secondly, the difficulty of the game, even on the easier difficulties, is quite high. Quick-save often, but make sure you keep ordinary saves too as the last thing you want to do is to quick-save in a situation where you are trapped and with no save to fall back to.
The characters are likeable all with their own personalities and their own skills.
As for how to complete the missions, it is left up to you for the most part, but there tends to be only one general way to get through. That said, you can be lucky or you can find kill-zones where enemies keep running around a corner and straight into your bullets. The enemy AI is not clever enough to try and find alternative ways around upon seeing a pile of dead soldiers. In fact, it will spot the dead bodies and send more over to investigate. I did complete some levels by clearing out barracks by doing this very thing, but you do have to have luck on your side.
The missions do range from a variety of landscapes which is a nice change. And don't forget that snow leaves footprints that will lure soldiers to you. Use it to your advantage as the Green Beret, though, but don't forget that the others won't want to leave a trail behind.
This brings me to a strange point. Part of the game is a strategy based on what abilities each commando has. But really, why can't the others use a combat knife to sneak up and cut throats or knock unconscious the guards and tie them up? Why can't everyone wear a disguise and not just the spy? Some of these restrictions don't feel realistic but it is part of what the game is about, to use the skills available to each commando.
On an annoying note, though, if any one commando dies you cannot complete the level as the storyline demands that they survive for the next mission, obviously. However, if a commando is killed it won't force you to restart the level or reload unless they are needed for some unfulfilled mission objective. Instead, the game lets you continue on to complete the objectives, but won't let you move to the next level because of the death.
Overall, the game is fun in ways, but also annoying in others. It's very much an average game for me but I did enjoy playing them. I've not played the rest of the series, though, and hope that they are coming to GOG.
First off GOG did a great job converting this game. This Win 95 game runs full wide screen on my Win 7 64 bit. And at the correct speed.
Many consider Commandos 2 the best. But i think part 1 nailed the commandos genre right over the head. In commandos 1 you control 6 commandos with very specific abilities. Only some can do silent kills, only some can carry bodies, and then there are very specific skills only 1 person can do.This leads to some very brilliant mission layouts.
Sneak the diver into the camp and steal a raft.
Get the raft to the spy so he can go to the camp and steal a uniform
Get the spy into the base so he can turn off the electric fence.
Use the Sapper to cut the fence and steal the TNT.
etc
I felt in part 2 and 3 they generalized alot of the skills taking away from what made the commandos unique. Plus in part 2 and 3 the AI is better, but i found that only took away more of the experience. Graphics still look great by today standards. Thanks to 2d engine.
