Solid remaster of a fantastic game
When Spanish developer Pyro Studios released Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines in 1998, it pioneered an entirely new genre. The hallmarks of it being brilliantly designed missions where a small team of specialized characters is tasked with completing a series of challenging tasks - from acquiring equipment, to blowing up buildings or military gear and finally escaping from the scene. To achieve that, you have to strategically place diversions, coordinate the actions of your commandos and find the best possible approach to prevail. All of that in real-time, of course. With Commandos 2 they refined the already great formula and created one of the best titles of the genre to this date. The missions are even more varied, there are more objects you can use to your advantage and new characters (and even pets) with their own unique abilities. Like all games in the genre, Commandos 2 is a challenging game. Expect a lot of trial and error when picking it up. However, once you get the hang of it and you manage to overcome its challenges, it becomes one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences in gaming. If you don't have Commandos 2 yet and you have a decently fast PC, then this remastered version is a good starting point. The game runs butter smooth on modern machines, typical aspect-ratio and resolutions are supported out of the box and as of version 1.11, the zoom feature works like a charm :) In general I'm happy with the post launch support of this version - the developers are still working on patches and most (if not all) of the initial problems have been solved as far as I can see. My only gripe with this version is the moderate increase in hardware requirements. Since the game doesn't look dramatically different when compared to the original, one would expect lower requirements. As for the censorship: The game is just as fun without nazi symbols and considering the small scope of the release, it's understandable that they didn't go for multiple versions.
