Close Combat: Invasion: Normandy takes WWII realism back to the beaches of Northern France. Re-live the campaign that gave the Allies a foothold on the doorstep of Fortress Europe. From Utah Beach to Cherbourg, Invasion: Normandy gives you strategic and tactical control of Allied or Axis forces in the pivotal battles that determined the fate of Europe.
Battle your way from Utah Beach to Cherbourg!
Campain system allows movement of multiple battle groups on a strategic map of the Cotentin Peninsula.
Accurate real-time battlefield: soldier morale and psyche model developed by a combat psychologist; realistic modeling for weapons, vehicles, historical weather and historical teams.
True line-of-sight and line-of-fire gameplay; direct and indirect fire with limited ammunition.
Easy-to-use Scenario Editor allows you to design your own battles, operations and full campaigns. You can even make special "what-if" scenarios to trade with other players.
Continuity from battle to battle: your tactical successes and failure have a direct impact on the whole campaign.
I used to love playing the close combat game back when they came out, but they really have not aged well.
After I played Steel Division 2, which follows the same format, but is better in just about every imaginable way, I just can't play this game anymore.
So unless you never had the chance to play these game back in the day, and are feeling nostalgic, go to steam and play Steel Division 2,
If you've played the other CC games, CC2 still has the best close quarter combat mechanics -by far. And I thought both CC2 and CC3 were more entertaining in their layout than this one. The Germans in CC5 have several units (named OST) with Russian small arms that afaik isn't even historical and takes the fun away.
You get a strategic map with CC5 where you can actually move divisions around, so it adds that aspect which had been completely lacking in CC3, and was only vaguely present in CC2 with the green line representing allied advancement. But, even without a map CC3 seemed more entertaining as a whole (since you units did evolve in equipment) and CC2 even more so.
CC5 never really gives you the feeling of lacking supplies. Or of balanced battles that require much tactical thinking. You hardly feel any impact in maximize certain casualties in one battle to exploit those effects in the next battle after a strategic retreat.
This is due to the AI being poor all around. CC2 was better at it, CC3 was bad, and CC5 feels as just dropping AI quality to a point where every move the computer makes is linear.
Altogether the game is so easy it doesn't give any challenge at all. If you play the Germans you can drive the Allies into the sea in 2 or 3 days. And after you win the campaign, there isn't even the classic cut-scene or splash screen to give you a feel of conclusion. You win and just find yourself back at the main screen.
Lastly, you don't get the convenient bars to indicate unit moral/experience, just a text description. And even if you manage to get you soldiers medals, the promotions are still broken - even more than in CC3. Except in CC5 the rooster is even worst (you don't even get a convenient rooster, letting you check all individual soldiers at a glance.)
So the game was just a disappointment of an experience. You expected some development but except the strategic map, they broke more things than they fixed. I had to force myself to play it through.
