Close Combat 3: The Russian Front includes a free copy of Close Combat (Windows 7 / 8 only, added as a bonus goodie)
Lead your men through the largest, bloodiest battle of the century.
Command a fire brigade of soldiers on the Russian Front in this real-time strategy game set in World War II featuring unequaled detail, realism and scope. Player as either the Soviets or Germans as you orchestrate your squads' attack, defense, and survival over four grueling years of the grandest and bloodiest war the world has ever seen. To succeed, you must guide your man through the moral dangers of war while physically an psychologically defeating your enemies. Your soldiers are counting on you. Don't let them down!
Command the same men throughout the entire four-year campaign - from the initial German invasion of Operation Barbarossa to the pivotal Russian victories at Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, and Berlin. Or rewrite a chapter of the history by rallying your German troops to take Red Square.
Over 300 specialized squads - 100 weapons, 60 soldier types, and 60 distinct vehicles and antitank guns. Including 120 mm mortars, flame-throwers, rocket launchers, half-tracks and off-map heavy artillery barrages.
Manage your squads by resting, refilling, and upgrading them between battles. Follow each soldier as he progresses from green rookies to seasoned veterans and advance in rank to command more units.
Create your own "what if" scenarios with Close Combat III's enhanced Scenario Editor. Craft single or multi-map battles and set deployment zones, objective locations, requisition points, and available units.

I like the old Close Combat games, but they're difficult to get going, and touchy even when they run.
First run - nothing, Gog Galaxy spluttered 'Syncing' then nothing, back to the 'Play' button.
Then...
2. Go to the executable program ( cc3.exe wherever your 'Close Combat 3' directory / folder is).
2.1 Right-click cc3.exe and in 'Properties' set compatibility to 'Win 98 / Win Me'. Ok.
- I got the message 'Unable to add dsound.stream', what? (The intro videos don't work).
2.2 HOLD DOWN THE CONTROL KEY WHILE YOU (double-)CLICK-TO-START cc3.exe.
- You get the options screen. This is great, can fix some things from here.
2.3 Turn off videos.
- I also set video-resolution to 1280x768, and scroll speed to slow.
It worked! I ran a quick test battle! But, I can't alt-tab or leave the CC screen or it goes all weird.
It also now starts from Gog galaxy, I'm not sure it remembers it's settings all the time though.
At least, that's a start.
CC3 is an interesting - it's tense, it's fun, it's strategic but it's also /unfair/. Depending on how you play or how serious you view that, it should warrant whether you invest in this game (or this series - because the flaws I saw seem to recur in most if not all CC titles!).
The tutorial itself doesn't really tell you much. It feels like an afterthought they spent a minute on. So you're left with trial & error, & if you're like me, you'll have trouble figuring out effective strategy, especially since the campaign is purposely asymmetrical on top of the AI's deadly accurate aim from across the map or excellent eyesight spotting your ambushes with every one of your units well-hidden. It's one thing if the player makes mistakes, but the AI never seems to have that problem. For this reason, I would only recommend playing this game on easy or very easy - & even then, the AI will score some cheap shots. This is the main issue with the game - so egregious, I have to warn you, but everything else I have to say is positive.
The system of investing your resources & customizing your force is simultaneously stressful & rewarding: do you invest in several infantry units & spread them out for long & wide sightlines? Send them all in a mad charge to overwhelm your foes? Maybe a sniper or mortar team provide support? Or maybe you just want to invest in some tanks & blow them all to hell? Your choice. You can flank, dig in & hold to the last man, stagger retreats, place ambushes, or even offer a truce so you & your opponent can lick your wounds & refit what you can.
Another fun thing to do is track your units - watch them accrue awards & experience, going from jittery recruit to full-on war hero (granted you keep them alive by the war's end). Your troops react accordingly - militias may panic, men will get cut off & surrender, & undisciplined cowards may refuse to follow orders until things quiet down. Added replayability & fun in the (unfortunately limited) scenario-maker.
