Someone should have warned the Covenant children: “Never read aloud strange rituals.” Little did they know that their childish game would unleash unspeakable horrors upon the unsuspecting world. Now, many years later, Jeremiah Covenant, the last sane sibling, lies on his deathbed knowing his fragile existence is the only thing restraining the curse. His only hope is Patrick Galloway, a fellow soldier from the Great War and a specialist in abolishing evil abominations.
Welcome to Clive Barker’s Undying, a horrifying FPS romp of curses, strange, mad creatures, and family dysfunction gone terribly wrong. Step into the shoes of Patrick Galloway as you attempt to banish the evil using your arcane magic and the ever-dependable six shooter of metal grace. Pray to whatever god you believe in because this journey may end up costing your soul. First person shooter meets the contemporary master of horror fiction, don't miss it!
I will never ever forget that game. This one was and still is the best horror game for me. Story and gameplay is so intense, especially the sounds. Without the sounds, Undying looses half of its charm. You can both shoot to kill and evolve your powers at the same time in this game. Solving puzzles and searching for room keys is a part of it. You'll never forget the dark corridor and the creepy sounds at the begining of the game.
Few games are genuinely scary or unnerving, but Undying was one of them. It had an atmosphere that to this day has hardly ever been equaled. Too bad it's half the game it was meant to be...literally. Undying was truncated by a shortened development time and thus the first sibling takes up 2/3s of the game and the others are very quickly dispatched in comparison. IF the team hadn't run out of time this would've been an even more amazing game. It's still amazing, but it's sad to think what could've been. Also it sold very badly, so EA cancelled the multiplayer patch and sequel.
I loved Clive Barker's Undying when I played it soon after its release. The atmosphere was great and it had a good story with a likeable main character in Patrick. The graphical presentation of the game was very good for its day, so much so that it wouldn't detract at all from replaying it again today.
The unique weapons that grow more powerful over time and the excellent interface to the game really add something special to an outstanding atmospheric and at times scary adventure. The music and sound effects are quite good. In one particular section, a very unexpected event happened that genuinely scared me the first time. Rare is the game that pulls that off in my experience.
I would highly recommend Undying to anyone who enjoys shooters and horror themed games.
First of all, Clive Barker was brought in relatively late on the project, so while many of the aspects were of his design, much of it was completed before he got on board, so, due to this, the title is a bit misleading.
However, this is a great game. Sure it contains the new age bologna that you can fight the occult with the occult, like just about every other game out there, but those looking for dark atmosphere mingled with horror will find it.
Other than the graphics being a bit dated, this game can hold its own with most modern games.
The environment design is wonderful and very Lovecraftian. If you like Lovecraft, you should like this.
The game is a macabre walk into the bizarre, a roller coaster descent into madness, which doesn't disappoint.
For the price, it is well worth your money. $5.99? That's nothing!
The game is all about atmosphere, and traditional gothic horror. I cannot emphasize the Lovecraftian tone enough.
The environments are simply beautiful.
Gothic horror at its finest.
Titus 3:5 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
I remember when I was so young (about 11-12 years old) playing this game for the first time, I was SO scared that when the first fight came I just alt-f4 it! then I found out my older brother played and quit at the same spot! and then father got to fight the prowlers and keep on moving through the manor, you won't regret getting this game! I had so many nightmares because of it, and after 10 years it still haunts me from time to time.
