Citizen Sleeper

A quality game. Enjoyable. Sound track supports it well.

I'd call this a text-adventure with role-playing elements. It features serviceable 3D-graphics for the environment of The Eye and beautiful 2D-artwork for the characters. The music and ambience are very good as well, although the track variety seems limited. Where the game utterly shines is the writing: The interactions with the large cast of characters are beautifully done and the world-building of a post-collapse fringe society, still strongly influenced by the powerful core worlds, hangs over everything. But what really got to me were the personal stories we take part in: From a gruff street food vendor with a dark past, to a down-on-his-luck assassin hunting you down or a biologist turned guru; these characters varied greatly, from likeable to really frustrating... but always believable as people. I only wish the person cutting stacks of onions while I was talking to the dad and his adorable adopted daughter had stopped doing that a little sooner. In terms of gameplay, you visit distinct places that you can interact with: Pay money for food. Work a job to gain money or influence with a group. Do something to move character stories or plot along. These interactions require either items (like money) or one of the dice you get each morning: The number of dice you get depends on your health, so the healthier you are, the more work you can do before having to rest. Resting moves time along. But you are free to do as much as you want (or can) on each day, no hurry. You need to keep track of your needs (food & health, both decline constantly and potentially when you fail an interaction), which can be quite stressful at the start, but gets a bit too easy in the endgame. Some events are timed by days, moving along whether you're ready or not: I failed a few quests this way, but never lost the game because of it. Instead, the story moves along, with all of the consequences of your actions or inaction. Overall, this was a wonderful experience. But be ready to read a lot.

Citizen Sleeper is an exceptional game, blending a captivating narrative with engaging gameplay. We step into the worn boots of a Sleeper—an individual whose consciousness has been transferred into an android body, designed for relentless corporate mining. Having escaped their contract, we strive to survive on the space station known as The Eye. Our journey is enriched by a diverse cast of compelling characters, each driven by unique motivations. While their stories initially appear disparate, they're intertwined together, offering eight endings. The seemingly simple gameplay turns out to be a bit tricky. Each day, we receive a pool of randomly rolled d6 dice. These dice are then allocated to various actions, with the outcome determined by your character's stats and the dice value, resulting in positive, neutral, or negative results. Strategic resource management and calculated risk-taking are crucial for survival. Citizen Sleeper features a solid soundtrack, though it lacks the iconic memorability of, say, Disco Elysium. Furthermore, the absence of voice acting, a feature that significantly enhanced Disco Elysium The Final Cut, feels like a missed opportunity. The game's art style is aesthetically pleasing, with detailed character portraits and a captivating depiction of The Eye. However, it doesn't quite possess that elusive "wow" factor that would elevate it to a flawless 5/5. From a tech standpoint, Citizen Sleeper performs well, boasting a clear and intuitive UI. While I encountered a few minor visual glitches, they were infrequent and did not impede gameplay. It's a really incredible mix of survival resource management and a visual novel. Incredible writing and characters.

A beautiful, well-crafted work of art. I cried several times reading the various stories that unfolded, and I couldn't stop playing without knowing what was going to happen to Sleeper and his friends. The gameplay is engaging, without punishing you too much, but presenting risks. The music is perfect. The character artwork is wonderful. It's very easy to feel part of this world, to be in Sleeper's skin. While I was playing, my only criticism was how few interactions there were with Stray - who, despite this, I continued to feed - so I cried again when I saw him appear in the final text. I'll remember this game and its characters.
