I bought this as popcorn and it fits that rôle very well. There are many familiar things here for RTS players, buildings, collection, workers, etc. It is somewhat simple, but fast paced. I don't think it was intended to be incredibly deep, rather a lighthearted addition to the genre. That said, I am enjoying it very much. Thanks for the game!
The two nice things about the game are its coherent cute look and its caring developer. Instead of hexes or squares, all map areas are impossibly-tall circular pedestals arising out of the clouds, and loads of units run around like ants. It's cute! The developer can be found answering questions here and on Steam, seemingly dedicated to maintain his/her audience.
Now for the mediocre and bad elements. For a strategy game, there just aren't a lot of mechanics. There isn't much choice in upgrades; they will always be the same. There isn't much choice in army composition; you just want as many units as possible. For a game about moving armies around, there is very little UI support for, e.g., selecting specific units, seeing their statuses, or directing units along a route. Also, the balance doesn't seem great. Units with absolute overwhelming strength are only slightly more expensive than useless units. Most units are useless as most mechanics, such as healing, barely work in proportion to the cost. The procedural generation doesn't work well. A map may be virtually impossible or winnable in a few seconds at the same difficulty. (For example, you may spawn in a corner with few resources and a powerful rival blocking all exits.)
Circle Empires just isn't complex enough to hold my attention. I've turned it on a few times and played one of the short games, and it played almost the same way each time. There isn't a campaign, so you will have seen everything after a game or two.
Not a bad little game for the price. There are higher difficulties for those that want more challenge. I only have the "impossible" difficulty left. I really had to watch myself on "nightmare" mode, and "normal" was still a bit easy. Regardless, if you want to get a quick RTS KILL! KILL! KILL! fix on, this game will do it.
It's very basic and easy, even on the hardest possible difficulty, I had no problem sweeping through the map (and I'm not an RTS master at all). There is no risk/reward in this game, all the resources are pretty easy to come by and if you attack a highly leveled enemy there is not much reward. Overall meh, too bad I like the idea.
Including extreme this game is a fun game when you are bored. The nightmare mode (at least in Imperial conflict- I haven't tried out other nightmare modes) is complete nonsense. Enemys for 5000g can spawn in the first minute of the game or a dragon for 10000 res. Furthermore the enemy has unlimited supplies so even when he is reduced to one circle he can produce and produce and produce. What bothers me the most is the fact that the enemys on extreme and nightmare are getting level ups for free. This might be ok with hunters or guards but an instant infected on lv 4 or lich on lv 3/4 especially right at the beginning is just nonsense. A funny part are the swamps. Sometimes there are swamps with only 1900 force power which would be completely ok if not all the enemys would have splash dmg AND a soul stone wtf! I can't give more then 3 stars for such an unbalanced game. Rebalance the nightmare mode a bit (extreme is tough but doable) and maybe there is one star more to go.... Maybe with a little storyline? :) Oh not to forget. Sometimes the units are running in the opposite direction to what you send them... It is not unwinnable tho even if the enemy spawns a dragon on the first second tho :) Maybe you are lucky and have a frog witch pond next to the enemy. They can weaken the enemy through their sleep that even the dragon falls to them. After that you can win the game even on nightmare.... yay...^^
