ABOUT

Having its roots in 1997 and developed in Ukraine, Chasm: The Rift is one of the most thrilling and innovative FPS from this era and the first Eastern European boomer shooter ever made.

THE STORY

Feeling you are no longer alone, you turn, with just enough time to shoot, killing the mutation charging mercilessly toward you. You begin to sense an eerie feeling of fear in the air, but your skin crawls as you realize it's your own...What was that thing?

Again and again you shoot, battling more strange beasts; all grotesque mutations of creatures you once knew. Suddenly the inexplicable becomes clear. Time channels have formed in the Earth's atmosphere, turning once normal life forms into something they were never meant to be. As part of a special commando unit, you must not only ward off and eradicate the beasts, but destroy the time channels to finally rid the Earth of these deadly mutations.

GAMEPLAY

Along with a heart-pounding adventure through the Corridors of Time and the satisfaction of ripping limbs from hideous monsters with the iconic BladeGun, and an innovative weather system, the player will now be able to enjoy this late 90’s FPS classic with the comfort of modern PCs, now with full 4K support, improved sound design, achievements, and localised into twelve languages.

GAME FEATURES

- Blow off monsters' limbs even as they continue to attack with remaining appendages
- Different effects including water, rain, snow, wind, smoke, dust, sparks, explosions and distant fades
- Awesome array of weapons, including unique Blade Gun
- Enhanced graphics with full 4K support
- Improved sound design

Great game. See below for Crash Issue.

Great game. This is how a re-release should be. Great graphics. Widescreen resolution works well. No stretching or graphic oddities. Great game. As of 2/2023, graphics config is borked. Installed via Galaxy, resolution set to 10000x10000. What? Works on Win7 Windows 7 Fix for Crashing issue: Config located in this directory: C:\Users\\Documents\Chasm Edit the text file "chasm_config.txt" (It is UNIX formatted. To make it more readable, use Notepad++.) Edit the following parameters. "Renderer" "DirectX11" "Resolution" "1920x1080" <---Any reasonable setting. "Shading Quality" "0" <---Set both to start up "VSync" "0" <---Set both to start up Once in game you can change settings to your liking.

This one is a mixed bag

It's hard to rate this game. - If you look at it from a historical perspective - it's a magnificent snapshot of a Quake-era game, built on a weird Frankenstein's monster of an engine (a mixture of a pre-Doom engine with Quake-like 3D models) - If you look at it with nostalgia goggles, this is a perfect version of an old game. Higher resolutions, no issues, and perfectly playable on new systems. In every sense a great port. If you loved it 30 years ago, you'll love it again. - If you want a fun old shooter, it will drive you absolutely insane. Cheap deaths, evil enemy placement, devilish enemy spawning... This game hates you, like most 90's FPS's. Even more sometimes. Your rockets and bullets will hit walls and corners when you expect a clear shot, heat-scanners seem to start shooting the same millisecond your first pixel enters their line of sight... It's frustratingly evil if you play on harder then Easy. If you're in the first two categories, it's worth the asking price. If you never played it, want a fun shooter, but don't like 90's shooters - avoid like a plague

Fun but short

Back in 1997, Chasm left many people unimpressed. Often called "a poor man's Quake," Chasm is a much more interesting game re-released 25 years later. In retrospect, it is quite amazing how well the game has aged. Chasm still looks surprisingly good to this day, with assets being more detailed than in Quake, yet looking sharper and more appealing than the texture-filtered environments from Quake II. Both visually and in regard to the sound design, Chasm of course is highly reminiscent of Quake, but considering that Quake is one of the best FPS ever made, one could think of a worse game to take inspiration from. In terms of gameplay, Chasm is a very basic game. Aside from running and shooting, there isn't much depth to the game, and while the enemies are varied, their attack patterns aren't. Most are restricted to melee or slow projectiles, which can be dodged with ease. The only thing that makes the engagements are bit more interesting is the dismemberment system, which allows one to shoot limbs or heads off, often depriving enemies of their weapons in the process. The more challenging part is finding the level exit. While not exactly puzzle-heavy, Chasm requires the player to be attentive of their surroundings, especially when it comes to the boss fights, which cannot be won through sheer firepower alone. This brings me to the main issue with Chasm. Depending on how quickly the level exit is found, Chasm can be beaten in less than three hours. The add-on adds maybe 20 minutes of extra gameplay, but that's about it then. Still, Chasm has a certain charm to it, and while I wouldn't buy this at full price due to how short it is, Chasm is a game well worth playing nonetheless.

"I can't believe it's not Quake."

A nice retro shooter that looks like Quake, but secretly actually uses a Doom-like engine with polygonal graphics shoved in. The final episode (levels 13 to 16) looks like some kind of an HD version of Doom's episode 1, with the boss fight reminding me of Quake's final boss. My only real complaint would be that you sometimes get some weird collision with level geometry because of how the game engine actually works, and that there's a danger of accidentally softlocking the final bonus level unless you know in advance what you're supposed to do. You see, in this game, you don't just mindlessly shoot at the bosses until they die. Instead, every boss has a special gimmick that acts as the only way to kill it. The problem with Bonifaciy is that not only could you find his gimmick to not be obvious, but it's also time-limited, meaning that by the time you figure it out, it's already too late and you need to restart the whole level. I wish they'd make the game open source just so we could see what kind of black magic sorcery they did with the engine, but alas.

Great nostalgic shooter

But I paid half GoG's price retail for the box set back in the day.
