Description
“The future is chaos and chaos is you!” - The Exploited “Chaos is My Life”.

The World United Solidarity (WUS) has made life boring in the year 2050. No sex, no booze, not even candy cigarettes were allowed. The people were tired of being WUS-sies, they had enough of censorship on TV and on the internet. Enter the Chaos Overlords. Former crimelords and CEOs, these leaders decided to capitalize on the people by creating chaos - selling the populace all the drugs, high-caliber weaponry, and pornography they desired. The cities have become battlegrounds as the Chaos Overlords vie for power as they attempt to destroy each other.

You are a Chaos Overlord. The city lies vulnerable before you, waiting for all the chaos that you can bring. Wage a strategic war of influence on an 8x8 grid that represents city blocks. Hire gangs at the beginning of each turn and seize control of the city, block by bloody block. Research new items for your gangs to equip so they can dominate your enemies’ gangs in combat. It’s time to make some chaos, so go out there and kick some neck!
  • More than 70 unique gangs, such as the Disgruntled Postal Workers, Renegade Nuns, or the Bankers.
  • Sow chaos and disorder with more than 50 weapons, performance-enhancing items, and armor types.
  • A complex strategic layer of gameplay where you can snitch on your opponents, bribe the police, and engage in gang-to-gang battles.

My childhood

I spent years thinking i made this game up after i lost the disc in a house move and forgot its name! A good chunck of my teens was spent playing this game after i found it in a bargin bin. The interface has aged, its true. However if you stick with it you will find a great turnbased game. As mentioned in another review, it plays alot like a boardgame. It has some great artwork to represent your gangs as you set to work taking out rival gangs. You can equipment with various items you can research and each square of the 'board' contains various building of different values that add to your empire. If boardgames are your thing, i wouldnt think twice about trying it out! i know what im going to be doing for the next few months!

Facebook of Chaos Overlords

"Chaos Overlords March 6 No, we're not dead. Although you wouldn't know it if you came to this page. I truly apologize for the lack of updates. Chaos Overlords on GOG: They don't seem to be motivated to produce the Mac version anymore. They also aren't interested in fixing the white block error in the Windows version of the game. The product is a wrapper around our original exe, so we don't have the ability to make a Mac build or fix bugs. Both issues are quite disappointing to us." uhmmm

For problems with win7/8/10

I managed to play on these OS using windows 98 compatibility mode and 8 bit color. But it has to be on 32-bit systems. If it's a 64-bit OS, the white rectangles will appear even in compatibility mode. I played that title at the time of its release and now recently and it's just amazing, it's aged really well. For those who like the style of play, it's worth it.

Great Fun

Chaos Overlords is unlike any strategy game I've ever played. It has a colorful premise, fun gameplay and maybe the best soundtrack I've heard on a computer game. The graphics might seem a bit dated, but the game initially was released about 15 years ago, and it holds up well. What I really like is its subtlety. As other reviewers have noted, Chaos Overlords has a lot of depth that only becomes apparent after playing several times. Gangs like the Nancy Boys and equipment like Cool Shades and Boomboxes might seem peripheral, but with repeated play you'll find everything has its uses. For strategy gamers looking for a whole new challenge beyond set-piece battle and God games, this is the one to get.

AI cheats constantly

The game's creator gave interviews when this game was released boasting about the sophistication and cunning of the AI. It's a lie. While you are restricted by fog of war, the AI is not and can see everything at all times. Rather than process all turns at the same time, the game allows the AI to see what you're doing and react to it on the same turn. Since all players, AI or human, are restricted to recruiting a single unit per turn, the AI can prevent you from winning by simply spending the entire game recruiting gangs into one of your areas every single turn, non-stop, for the entire rest of the game while totally ignoring its own territories being taken by other AIs (who will then use these resources to clobber you). In short, this game is among the worst examples of fake difficulty. This might be tolerable if the game's creator hadn't lied about it and pretended he'd coded some kind of brilliant AI when he'd simply allowed the computer to constantly and blatantly cheat. You can demonstrate this simply for yourself by playing any game variant which requires actual strategy rather than just straightforward kill-them-all to win; the AI becomes hopelessly incompetent. The game can be fun if played with other humans, but don't rely on the AI to provide any kind of fair challenge when playing solo.
