Description
Caves of Qud is a science fantasy roguelike epic steeped in retrofuturism, deep simulation, and swathes of sentient plants. Come inhabit an exotic world and chisel through layers of thousand-year-old civilizations. Decide: is it a dying earth, or is it on the verge of rebirth?

NOTICE: a complete development roadmap can be accessed here.

Who are you?

Play the role of a mutant indigenous to the salt-spangled dunes and jungles of Qud, or play a pure-strain descendant from one of the few remaining eco-domes—the toxic arboreta of Ekuemekiyye, the Holy City; the ice-sheathed arcology of Ibul; or the crustal mortars of Yawningmoon.

You arrive at the oasis-hamlet of Joppa, along the far rim of Moghra'yi, the Great Salt Desert. All around you, moisture farmers tend to groves of viridian watervine. There are huts wrought from rock salt and brinestalk. On the horizon, Qud's jungles strangle chrome steeples and rusted archways to the earth. Further and beyond, the fabled Spindle rises above the fray and pierces the cloud-ribboned sky.

You clutch your rifle, or your vibroblade, or your tattered scroll, or your poisonous stinger, or your hypnotized goat. You approach a watervine farmer—he lifts the brim of his straw hat and says, "Live and drink, friend."

What can you do?

Anything and everything. Caves of Qud is a deeply simulated, biologically diverse, richly cultured world.
  • Assemble your character from over 70 mutations and defects and 24 castes and kits—outfit yourself with wings, two heads, quills, four arms, flaming hands, or the power to clone yourself—it's all the character diversity you could want.
  • Explore procedurally-generated regions with some familiar locations—each world is nearly 1 million maps large.
  • Dig through everything—don't like the wall blocking your way? Dig through it with a pickaxe, or eat through it with your corrosive gas mutation, or melt it to lava. Yes, every wall has a melting point.
  • Hack the limbs off monsters—every monster and NPC is as fully simulated as the player. That means they have levels, skills, equipment, faction allegiances, and body parts. So if you have a mutation that lets you, say, psionically dominate a spider, you can traipse through the world as a spider, laying webs and eating things.
  • Pursue allegiances with over 60 factions—apes, crabs, robots, and highly entropic beings—just to name a few.
  • Follow the plot to Barathrum the Old, a sentient cave bear who leads a sect of tinkers intent on restoring technological splendor to Qud.
  • Learn the lore—there's a story in every nook, from legendary items with storied pasts to in-game history books written by plant historians.
  • Die—Caves of Qud is brutally difficult and deaths are permanent. Don't worry, though—you can always roll a new character.

A truly impressive sci-fi gem

The game, altough not complete and with some missing features, is in a perfectly viable state, and it can provide hundreds of hours of fun. In a massive procedurally generated world, the developers have created an incredibely rich and immersive environment, with a depth of narration and lore-buillding that very few titles manage to deliver (Dwarf fortress to name the most famous one). The setting is a visually stunning esotic retro-futuristic lost world in which you will (if you are into this type of sci-fi) get lost in and be amazed by the copious amount of game mechanics, builds, and way of thriving and dying in an extremely alien world. So, if you are into sci-fi and hard rogue-likes, this game is for you. Recently the devs have introduced a new mode that ease the difficulty by toggling permadeath, and another one that allows you to explore the game without having to care about fighting. On top of that, they are currently devoloping a new more modern UI, so the game is playble also with less keys (altough controlling your character just with the keyboard is fairly easy and intuitive). Further more, they have added some starting builds that really help new players to get a feel of the gaming experience without being overwhelmed by the complex mechanics. On the other hand, on a more negative side, if you are new to the genre this game can be really intimidating at first, and expect to DIE A LOT in your first playthroughs! But you will slowly start to understand how to play beside the basical commands, grasping the strategy and tactic behind the fight-and-flight mechanics. Adding another negative note (that does not reduce my five stars), as other reviewers have said, this version is not compatible with the Steam mods, so you will have to tinker a bit in order to make the mod works. Overall, I really praise the extremely detailed and engaging work the the small dev tems (mostly two) have done, and I really suggest you to give QuD a shot!

Unique sci-fi roguelike game!

The true riches lie bellow, in the Caves of Qud. A unique roguelike with a devoted development team, a bright future and a good community. The character building system is enormous and almost limitless, I love playing an albino birdman with a laser rifle shooting from above, or an amphibian mutant desert dweller wearing a stillsuit. On top of that the art-style is gorgeous and the music is perfect. It's worth the price and runs on surprisingly slow PCs despite the complexity, go for it. Live and drink, friend. It's the best RogueLike i've ever played

A super innovative and whimsical game that really made me feel like i was halfway between reading a pretty good book and playing a really fun game, would totally recommend despite the overblown seth "discourse"

Awesome Game

Honestly this game is really addictive and the randomized nature of the roughlite/like features makes it fun to get a disease or fungal infection just to see how you get rid of it. I honestly turn off all the rougelike features because I just want to have fun but once you get far enough along the game actually has a cannon in game item that works like a save point and once you clone the merchant who sells it ten times you can buy a bunch of them and a bunch of duplication spray and have near unlimited saves. Also found out the guy who made it lives like 50 minutes from me which is wild to me. I could just run into this guy at a flea market or something and buying it is kinda like supporting a local bussiness I guess. The game takes a bit to get used to but if you just watch a video or two if you can't get it and you'll be fine. It's more accessable and clickable now I mostly played when it was a both hands on the keyboard game and I still really liked it. Give it a try or watch someone else play it cause it's really it's own kinda thing that's hard to really compare it to anything but obviously it's very CDDA and Dwarf Fortress adventure mode inspired and I played it before either of those two
