Cathedral

In the style of the old Wonder Boy in Monster Land this is great! The art, music, and level design is top notch! The controls are also very tight, for a Wonder Boy clone.. BUT. it can be incredibly punishing at times.. lots of rooms have needlessly many enemies and they have a penchant of spawning flying enemies when you have to do jumping thats its not even fair. You cant even avoid the enemies since they just gang up and follow you through the whole room! The fast travel and checkpoint system is also needlessly spaced out. You end up running through several areas anyway to get where you want, wasting lots and lots of time and money (from dying again and again just to travel to a new place) So, again. i LOVE this game, but i also HATE it!

The map is vast and full of explorative potential, the level design is great with a bit of Castlevania 1-3 energy behind it (though more forgiving I'd say), and charming art style

The game is not bad in particular. It manages to keep you interested although it's a constant source of frustration due to the roque-like part. Basically you can't win with skill alone, it's impossible by math. If you walk into a situation unprepared, for most enemys, even the weak, you are a 1-hit until you managed to purchase/find the right upgrade/perk for that area. The story is almost non-existing. Some jump-and-run sections are actually quick-time-events in disguise. There are also control issues. On the Linux Version the Left Stick of the XBOX360 controller resets position occasionally and you just stop, always seen at cut scenes. This is particular annoying during boss fights as you have to let go of the Stick and then move into the desired direction again. Therefore 2 Stars. The title could be 4 Stars if it was correctly balanced and the roque-like part reworked/removed.

Cathedral won't revolutionize the explorative platformer/metroidvania sphere, with its strong artistic inspiration to retro titles and a lack of solid story, but it is capable of entertaining right up to the end credits.
