Absurdly Fun
I've never had such fun with a racing game before. Heck, it's not even much of a racing game, but... you'll get the idea when you play it. And its successor, Carmageddon 2, is just incredible! I hope they bring it to GOG one day. Anyways, if you enjoy random open area mess-arounds, you'll enjoy the Carmageddon series. This is a must for anyone who likes to have fun.

Still holds up. Great package!
This game is just so much fun. There are elements of the gameplay that are still unmatched by any other game that has come since the original Carmageddon. GOG has also done a great job packaging this original game into something that can be run on more modern hardware. The setup is easy aside from one minor tweak needed to make the 3DFX mode playable (I had to tweak the gamma using the nGlide config tool. But the GOG forums had the information I needed to fix it) The little extras like the papercraft cars, original concept art, and manuals are also a sweet addition.

Best "racer" ever!
This is the best vehicle game franchise ever. This game is the whole reason why I still yell "500 points for the slow person crossing the street" 20 years later. Honestly who really played this for the racing element? I always considered a level unfinished if there were still cars that weren't destroyed or people still running for their lives. The whole fun of this game was exploring and grabbing powerups then performing crazy trick jumps or obliterating other cars. The racing element was more just a way to move onto a different track to explore. I always considered this game to be the spiritual successor to Deathtrack (1989), which was a racer where you upgrade your car's weapons and defenses to take out other cars and win races. Deathtrack was fantastic when it came out and was actually playable, and then Carmageddon came out to become my new favorite killer car game.

Excellent first half, awful second half
The first half of the game is silly fun where you can choose between wiping out the other cars or doing the race traditionally. Unfortunately later levels make you do obscene numbers of laps (12-15) of levels that are full of pits and obstacles that slow you down endlessly as well as being filled with near invincible police cars that relentlessly persue you. One level with 12 laps makes you climb a tiny bridge while being rammed by 3 police cars and your fellow drivers. You could instead choose to kill the other drivers but they become extremely armoured and the levels are so narrow you can hardly ever get enough speed to do damage. If you have enough speed the AI will often crash intentionally so you end up shooting past them and they sustain almost no damage. The final level even has a glitched and unkillable enemy so you have to endure 15 boring laps before you finally finish it.
