Description

Twenty years ago, the supervillains won.

Since then, they’ve created a dystopian city where developing super powers is a crime. Nobody has managed to slow them down, until now.

Capes is a turn based superhero strategy game where you build a team of heroes and fight to take back the city.

Played across a series of campaign and patrol missions, choose to push forward with the story or take the time to explore the side missions and unlock more heroes, earn skill points and complete challenges, and learn more about your heroes lives.

Recruit new heroes with a range of unique powers and abilities. Every hero plays differently, and requires a fresh approach to their powers and abilities.

Learning and exploiting each hero's unique play style will build their power in combat allowing them to unleash their personal tide turning Ultimates.

Exciting, heroic, turn based combat to test your strategic skills. Team ups and positioning matter, unlocking new ways to approach every enemy type and supervillain you encounter.

Capes combat isn't based around random numbers or lurking behind cover. Power doesn't make you invulnerable, far from it. Your choices will make the difference between victory and defeat.

Take up to 4 heroes to work together in each mission. Each hero gains a unique team up ability from each of their allies, allowing them to work together to take advantage of their unique powers.

Level up your heroes to gain access to new abilities and powerful upgrades.
Use Skill Points acquired from completing objectives and challenges to unlock their powers.

Complete collections of hero specific challenges during missions to earn bonus Skill Points and unlock optional missions that give a deeper insight into each of the heroes.

One more turn but opposite

As someone who has around 1300 hours in the Firaxis XCOM games and Midnight Suns, I absolutely hated this game. Tactical Turn-based games are some of the games I love the most and the old "one more turn" has always been true for me. For this game it's the complete opposite. For the past few days I would boot the game, play a turn or two, then quit the game. I just can't anymore. Writing wise, there is not a single likable character. You're supposed to root for you team, but I just can't. That's not to say I could root for the bad guys. Those are also laughably bad. One mechanic which in theory sounded good, but in practice I disliked, was the extra objectives, extra stars, you could accomplish during missions. In theory you replay a mission to get better at it and max out your score. The problem I have with it, is that you can't "get good" sometimes. You can run the same mission over and over again and you won't be able to max it because you don't have the abilities. If the game would promote me learning the fights, getting good, figuring out the puzzle, I would have loved it. But it promoted just grinding unlocks. If I wanted to grind I'd play a MMO. The other thing I don't get is how you manually design all missions, no procedurally generation, and yet you fail to balance the difficulty worse than games that do procedural generation? The difficulty spikes are insane. I would breeze through a mission just so that the next one to completely stomp me. Sometimes even during the same mission, you would do half of it with relative ease just so the game to then spawn a million enemies for the next part of the mission.

Held back by cringe writing

The game seems to play well enough. However, I couldn't handle the self-aware voice acting and cringey script that accompanied it. Every time there was a story event, I felt taken out of the world instead of becoming more immersed in it. YMMV

The writing... isn't good in this by the numbers, check the boxes snoozefest.

The graphics are very good. I truly love the comic book aesthetic. The sound/voice work is decent and ranges from good to ill-suited. The story is forgettable, by the numbers, for modern audiences yawn-fest. The *Heroes* have about as much depth as the narrative consultants' list of approved "for modern audiences" check marks. Well, except for the bad guys, the enemies have about as much diversity as a rank-and-file stormtrooper and share a similar palette. The characters which should be the core and driving factor of the game, are boring *safe* representations of characters as opposed to well-thought-out individuals and as such are not able to have the depth, flaws, and shortcomings that make for those unique individuals. The story is *blah*, overdone, and brings nothing new to the whole *Superheroes Failed* schtick. From the grizzled mentor who only cares about the 'ends', to the bright-eyed youth in over their head. Hell, the game even has a power psychic who is stuck in a wheelchair... Ultimately, the game is boring, and worse it is predictable. The occasionally interesting level and the excellent graphics are not enough to make me want to play more.

Not flawless, but worth your time.

The number of turn-based superhero games is thin on the ground, and this one is welcome. Its got some flaws (sometimes its ambition exceeds its budget I think), but learning to use each character as they become available and overcome the problems presented makes for some compelling game play. If I had a single big complaint, it'd be that it'd be nice if the game provided some, from lack of a better term, strategic layer play; there seems to be some potential room for it, but the designers didn't go there.

X-Com With Super Heroes

Why did it take so long to realize this combination? It's rather brilliant. Turn based combat with super heroes makes so much sense given the tropes of the genre, which are lovingly recreated here: rescuing civilians, combining attacks, disarming bad guys...etc. In a city taken over by super villains and an unlimited squad of bald stormtroopers you command a roster of new blood resistance fighters with super abilities. Simple, effective plot. The writing is cheese-tastic but I guess that goes with the genre. It's not much better or worse than a typical Marvel film, although maybe with a little more swearing. But the meat and potatoes of the game is as solid as the clean, chunky, appealing comic book art style. Each of the thirty or so levels is custom made thankfully, not procedurally generated, so you have opportunities to take advantage of cover and other environmental cues while enjoying the dynamic locales that are distinct. Gameplay is familiar to anyone who has played XCom: turn based squad combat, but with the advantage of heroes being able to do anything they want to within the limit of their energies rather than an arbitrary 'move' amount. Extra energy is added to the 'ultimate' status which is basically a limit break and unique to each hero. This Ultimate is compounded by the fact that heroes have tie-in attacks with specific other heroes which are very powerful so it encourages squad builds with compatible heroes. And after each battle you go back to base to improve your skills and your powers, find new allies, progress the plot. It's all rewarding stuff. I enjoy the grittier take on super heroes, the simple to learn/lifetime to master systems, the full voice acting although VERY overwrought is welcome. Overall a creative and enjoyable twist on a genre I already loved!
