And don't forget to wash your hands afterwards...

From a queue of some 360 "eager" conscripts waiting to go to war, a team of up to six will "volunteer" for each new mission. Encourage your soldiers to shoot anything that moves, throw grenades, fire bazookas, drive tanks, fly choppers, split up and do their own thing... and die... Guide your no-hoper's troop straight through deadly missions. And if you lose some of them? There's more where that came from...

FEATURES:

  • Easy interface means non-stop carnage
  • 360 fresh-faced recruits anxiously awaiting your direct orders to shoot to kill, throw grenades, drive tanks, fly choppers, divide and conquer or run around in circles and take each other out with friendly fire
  • 24 bullet spraying missions with 72 levels
  • All the great sound effects like jungle noises, booming explosions, distant copter rotors and some poor soldier's dying screams
  • Five types of enemies including M-16 carrying grunts, snipers, copter commandos, jeep engineers and artillery hot shots
  • Guide your motley crew over hill n' dale, through jungles, freezing cold wastelands and Africa-hot deserts, annihilating the enemy and blowing up buildings on the way
  • Use shameless flattery and brute force to work your way up the ranks from private to four-star general
  • 8 minute cartoon introduction

Please, add Amiga version

Game plays just okay. Controls are correct. Sounds and graphics are okay as well. But there is one major problem, at least for me. Introduction does not contain the amazing song that was featured in Amiga version - it's been replaced with simple midi tune. And I loved the original Amiga tune. So here's the suggestion - could it be possible to get Amiga versions of certain games brought here instead of (or along with) PC versions? Old games mostly work on emulator like DOSBox, so why not feature optional WinUAE emulator version? This *could* be major feature to bring back old Amiga gamers to use GOG.com. I trust one day it happens - good old games available on GOG.com in their best versions - as clearly Amiga version was superior to PC one in this case. Once it's done, 5 stars from me. At the moment of writing, 4 solid stars.

Great game, shame about the port

After 20-odd years I think this game holds up pretty well. It's an ingeniously simple concept and has an atmosphere and style all of its own and, in a word, it's good fun. It has its flaws, particularly the erratic difficulty 'curve', with some levels being almost impossible to complete, but in a way that's all part of its charm. The only problem is that this is a port of the inferior PC version. Those who remember the Amiga version may be disappointed by the rubbish sound effects. Also it runs a bit too fast making what was already a punishing game downright infuriating at times. Otherwise this is a nice trip down memory lane.

Disapointing PC version

I'm sure like many people, probably the majority of people who played nad loved Cannon Fodder, I played it on the Amiga. This is is unfortunately the PC version which doesn't play as well and crucially doesn't have the Amiga music and sound effects. I know that sounds minor but music and sound are crucial to creating the right atmosphre. This PC version feels flat and lifeless in comparison. This happens quite a bit for games from the late 80s and early 90s when PC games had terrible sound.

As a conversion it's not that great

I love the Cannon Fodder series to bits, but the PC versions of 1+2 were quite poor. Basically the graphics were scaled back from the console versions, making it look very primitive.

Promising but only for masochists

I haven't played the Amiga version many people seem to be praising, so I have no problem with the DOS version. But I can't remember if it ran this fast in the old days. Maybe it was a bit slower because of the 90s pc's? The game starts quite fun, about first four missions the difficulty level stays reasonable. Mission five starts to get on the nerves, and after that each mission throws new dirty tricks to make you more angry. It is mostly due to the inhuman speed the game runs but also with all the unfair ways to die. Well, if you are stubborn enough you can learn to get good in the game. Levels that first seemed impossible become possible when you first die a thousand times and slowly come up with the best strategy. Then you have better chances, but random deaths still occur. For example: - Bazookas shooting from outside the screen. Even after you memorize the location of each one it's still difficult to shoot them before they kill you - Driving vehicles is a fun idea but the controls and the level design makes it sometimes terrible. For example you have to jump from bumpers inside a labyrinth and if you land on the trees you explode or get stuck in the edge of the treeline - One-pixel traps - Swarms of soldiers that run faster than you - Levels that start with cannons shooting you before you can do anything. This is basically pure luck if you happen to get out of the way quick enough - Helicopter that follows you and constantly drops bombs - Selecting weapons and grouping the soldiers from the side panel with the mouse is too clumsy when the battle rages so fast I've managed to reach up to mission 12 (out of 20-something) but I'm exhausted because even though this game is highly addictive, not boring, and it gets more fun the better you get at playing. But every new mission gets more unfair. This game fills my soul with gut-wrenching agony, defeat, anger, and insanity. Play only if want to be like The Angry Video Game Nerd. Played with Linux Mint
